Gravid Behavior

Hi all.
I have a 4 year old iguana female sharing a cage with a 3.5 year female and a 3 year old male iguana.

The oldest one seems to be gravid. (is there a way of telling other than looking heavy?)
would this cause her to be aggressive?

Also since I have introduced her to the inclosure the other female has become a very dull colour

Is this because of dominance from the other female?

I have watched them for hours there doesn't seem to be any fighting, but Spike does get out of the way when the older female wants to get to her basking spot...

Here is a pic of the inclosure:

Re: Gravid Behavior

I don't know how to tell if she is gravid or not, but it sounds like you have at least one very stressed out Ig. They are NOT social animals, and tend to NOT do well when kept with other Igs. Having 3 in one cage is going to result in lots of stress for them, and might even kill one or more.

Re: Gravid Behavior

I agree with Shell on this one. Three iguanas normally don't work out for the better unless the cage is the size of a large room, even then it doesn't work sometimes

Re: Gravid Behavior

I agree. You need to seperate them! The ONLY time my female has shown signs of aggression is after laying when she was guarding the eggs. If your female lays she may very well attack the others in order to drive them away from the nest and since they CAN'T leave, bloodshed is likely!
But as to your original question. A gravid ig will show signs of extreme restlessness, wandering and digging, scratching at the bottom of the cage wanting out. These are signs of looking for a nesting site. As the eggs continue to develop the appetite will drop off and eventually the ig will stop eating. With all those eggs in her there is no room for food!
If you believe that the ig is gravid an xray will tell you for sure. And you need to increase the calcium intake.
