Breeding Season??

Hi all
I would like to know when breeding season is for an iguana? I have read it is normally at the end of summer. Is this true?
How will my Iguana know it is the end of summer?

Am I supposed to change the light settings according to seasons?
I am just a little confused about how they can tell?

I would like to start breeding with my iguana pair.

My female is about 3.5 years old and my male about 3 years old.
I only got the male a few months ago.
I have had the female from a few weeks old.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Breeding Season??

Just a questions as to why you would want to breed your iguana when there are so many out there for adoption as it is?

Re: Breeding Season??

First, let me advise against breeding your iguanas.
I don't know how it is in SA but in most places, there are already too many iguanas. The shelters and rescues are overrun with iguanas that have been given up or dumped when the owners found that they were incapable of dealing with them.
Also iguana mating can be quite violent resulting in serious injury or even death to one or both of them.
That said, the iguana itself will go into breeding season without any help from us. If it was as simple as controlling lighting or other husbandry, we would be able to prevent them from going into season with the resulting aggression or egging problems.

Re: Breeding Season??

Wow! I would have to agree with what everyone else has said, why would you want to breed them, when they are the reptile that is most dumped on the rescues? I have a houseful of them, and a waiting list that is enormously long. They are also the hardest reptile to adopt out and find proper homes for. I would highly advise against breeding, and suggest that you go and visit a reptile rescue and see the many many that are waiting for loving homes. You will also see many that are deformed, have serious health issues, serious attitude problems, and severely stunted growth. This all being done by lack of proper care and nutrition.

Feel free to take a look in my gallery, you will see some of my rescues there. I have not updated it for a while, but it will show you the brutal reality of what is in fate for most iguanas that are bred and sold to the general public.

Re: Breeding Season??

And please don't get the idea that anybody is slamming you for your question.
Its just that those of us who have been around for a while have seen the results and it breaks our hearts to know that many of these magnificent animals will most likely to have to be destroyed just becasue there aren't enough good homes to go around.

Re: Breeding Season??

Hi All
I have been looking for a long time to find unwanted iguanas here in SA.(about 3.5 years)
I have not found any yet.
Here in SA an Iguana is probably one of the more expensive reptiles.
You are lucky if you can find one for about $160.
The result being the buyers generally spend the extra money to make sure the animal is well looked after.

a 3 year old iguana sells for about $1250

I really love all my animals and love to learn all there is to learn about them.
I believe there is no better way to learn than to experience first hand.
P.S

I promote this website to anyone that is willing to listen.
I always seem to get bad looks from the pet stores and reptile shop owners.

I have:
6 bearded dragons(2 yellow)
6 Leopard Geckos
2 Iguanas
2 Tangerine Corns

I will soon get:
2 Chameleons
2 ball pythons

Thanks all.
I understand the concern.

If anyone knows about a shelter in SA please let me know.

Re: Breeding Season??

Oh wow! A three year old iguana that sells for 1250.00, I think I have died and went to Heaven. That definitely helps to keep them out of the hands of people who really dont care. I wish they were that way in the states!

Re: Breeding Season??

Yes they are a more expensive reptile over here...
But we seem to have bearded dragons that sell for too little...
you can find a Bearded Dragon from about $31.25

and snakes just over $10
