laying eggs and bone loss

My iguana is 8 years old and twice in the last 4 years she has laid eggs for absolutely no reason. She has always been completely solitary. The first time it happened it was a total surprise. She had been acting frantic and trying to get out of her cage for weeks. One day I came home and she's dropping eggs off her perch. I felt so bad, after reading how to take care of nesting iguanas... she was just trying to find a place to lay them. Well it happened again two years later and I learned from the signs from the first time it happened. I gave her extra vitamins and water, etc. Now, a few years later, she seems to be losing her health and has lost a lot of weight. Her diet is very healthy, I keep up with her vitamins, tank temp... But in the last few months, she's lost her appetite completely and I noticed I couldn't feel any teeth. Her jaw and gums look very healthy and her hind legs are not swollen, so I know it's not Metabolic Bone Disease or mouth rot. I'm just wondering if her tooth loss is due to the stress of laying eggs and pulling too much calcium from her body.

Re: laying eggs and bone loss

it is very important that you call a vet,,, I received an iguana in here months ago that had no teeth,, only he was a male and he required calcium injections and very rapid treatment. I cannot stress enough that you really need to call an exotics vet.
Good luck my thoughts will be with you and your iguana!

Oh,, and female iguanas will lay eggs even without having been mated it is very normal,,

There is something going on here other than laying eggs. Iguanas are built to lay eggs. What are you feeding and do you have a uvb light?
The problems you speak of have another source. I too suggest a vet. Iguanas don't just lose their teeth for no reason.

Yes, she has a uvb light. Her environment hasn't changed in any way. I live in a small city, hopefully I can find a vet with some reptile knowledge! Thanks for the response.

What area do you live in? Perhaps someone here can point you in the right direction.
