That doesn't surprise me. Burrowing is just what they do. They don't feel comfortable sitting out in the open. Staying buried keeps them moist and hides them from predators and prey alike. They're master ambushers.....and couch potatoes 
He's super-cute though, especially at that size. Once he starts looking like Jabba the Hutt....then we'll see
