New Pacman

Helloo. I recently aquired a pacman. I don't know how old it is or if it's a girl or a boy. I think it's a girl cause it doesn't have the "beard". I think that it's hybernating off and on. I try not to wake it up but every 9 or 10 days it wakes up and moves to a different spot to burrow. Is this normal? Also he won't eat fish, pinkies, or meal worms. I've tried to offer them to her but unless it's moving on it's own she won't touch it. She hasn't really been eating either when she wakes up. I use the substrait that comes in the block and you soak in water. The humidity is usually between 80% and 90%. I have a heating pad under the bottom. I was told that you want to change the substrait every other day. Is that true? It's what I've been doing but I feel like I'm bothering her too much. She's about 2.5 inches around. I'll have pictures when I get a hold of my camera. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: New Pacman

Welcome to HC! Very nice dog you have!

Here's a caresheet on Pacman frogs, as I don't have any experience with them at all myself. Hope this will help, and I'm sure someone will come along who knows more than I do!

Re: New Pacman

welcome.

The coco-husk is a great substrate, so keep using that.

I would put the under the tank heater on the side of the tank instead of the bottom. Pac-man frogs burrow, and they burrow to cool off. It doesn't get that the heat is lower and not coming from above. There is a good chance it can get burnt if it burrows to the glass.

Do you have a dish of water for him to soak in? Something that is about as deep as just below the top of his head like a small dog or cat dish. and maybe a rock or two in it to help him climb in and out.

You don't need to change the substrate. Just spot clean up the poop when you see it. What you should be changing every other day is the water dish.

As for the burrowing, thats what they do. What are your temps in the enclosure, what size is it and what size is your frog? what are your cage decorations like (if any)?

Re: New Pacman

I already have a littile tub and the tank is a 10 gal tank. I have some shrubbery and half a log so she can climb in under and hang out. I was looking at her this morning and she is more like 3 inches across. The temps are lower than they should be usually around 70 cause I live in Utah high in the mountains and it gets chilly. I have a pad on top of the glass so she won't get burned sitting on the heating pad. I'm wondering why she won't eat from my hands. And why won't she eat anything but crickets?

There is a big problem with your temps. I'm not sure what you mean by "on top of the glass." Get yourself a little shop light from a hardware store and a 60 watt light bulb, and set it on top of the wire mesh top. That should be all the heat you need. His temps need to be higher or he won't eat and what he does eat won't get digested. Those temps need to be up around 80 degrees. What area of the tank doesn't have the light, cover up with a piece of plexi glass to keep the heat and humidity in.

He probably won't eat meal worms and wax worms because they don't move enough. Try some earth worms.

And I wouldn't encourage him to eat from your hand. They will get teeth and they will bite and it WILL hurt. She probably won't eat from your hand because she is afraid of it.

Re: New Pacman

She is probably scared to death of your hand or cold. I would definitely invest in some blunt plastic forceps and use them to wiggle the food. Mine took some training, but he'll eat anything that comes anywhere near him now, and I can attest to the unpleasant bite. I got tagged when I was trying to change a filter out and it hurt, not that "ouch I just got pinched" kinda hurt, but that "alright you win, that hurt like H*** and I will do anything you want to keep it from happening again" kinda hurt.

As for motion, the pet supply store I go to here in MB has 12 inch forceps that are great for making food artificially move while staying out of strike distance.

Re: New Pacman

The temp pad is underneath the bottom of the glass and then I have a pad under the substrait to keep it from burning her. I never feed her from my hand but she won't eat anything that doesn't move. So crickets are about the only thing that move fast enough to catch her attention. I'll go get another bulb so the temp will be okay. Thanks for your help guys.
