Nice newt! First time I saw a Fire bellied newt was in PA. There were hundreds of them in the nooks and crannies of the lake. My oldest (then he was about 5-6) became intrigued with them. I wish we would have know that we could have brought home two from the lake. Had a difficult time finding them in MI, finally found some. Now years later we found them again. We had two but one disappeared and the other one (bigger of the two) got bigger.

You're getting to be a pro at the pics. The second set are 100% better. You know what? Your pics just took me back to the '50s when we used to catch them in East Falls along the Wissahickon Creek just above the falls at Ridge Ave. Yep, I know, that's dating me.

Hi. There are two newts in there. One in the water and one on the land. Fran thank you so much for the nice reply about the pictures. My brother just got me the camera for christmas. I wanted one without a flash and that's what he got me. Now I have to try and find the right lighting for the picture to come out right. Happy new year everyone! For those that drink PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, BE CAREFUL OUT THERE. And please don't shoot no guns unless there is no housing near you. Last year I lost a window and almost a dog. This year I will spend tonight getting all of my tanks away from the windows to unsure all my critters are going to be ok, So again no shooting where there is housing. You could kill some one or yourself. ( not that I'm saying anyone on this site would do anything like that but you never know).

Awesome pics. I used to have newts a couple years ago. I got kinda bored with them so I sold them to get a fidler crab.

Are you sure they weren't salamanders of some kind? If they were newts, they'd be a subspecies of eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens ssp.). The various species of fire-bellied newts are from southeast Asia.

Nice newts cap From what I can tell, they're Chinese (Cynops orientalis).
