appetite for sheep...

Apologies if these pics have been posted already.. this email was circulated at work about a sheep farmer puzzled as to why his flock was thinning out and set up an electric fence and then discovered this. Feel free to verify if this is all true and what kind of snake it is. I hope the snake wasn't harmed, there wasn't much info in the message but I'm afraid most likely the farmer had it destroyed

That's a Central African Rock python, I'm really not sure about the sheep controversy, could be I guess but there are more pictures of that animal, I've seen the dissection, it had an antelope in it's gut (or gazelle...not sure what they call them in Africa, looked like an antelope to me). I've not heard of either a rock python eating sheep nor sheep farmers in the area where this snake was found, though I guess it could happen.

Here's mine, it's a baby version of what you're seeing there, not quite a year old and already six feet long!

And trust me, they do NOT make good pets. Unless you are lucky enough to find one CB, they'll be either farmed or caught animals from Africa and will be wild all their lives. My animal will barely tolerate being handled now, and they're known for turning on their owners. He's going to be a major handful once he grows another couple of feet, not to mention when he's 15-18 feet long.

My guess is that the snake in your pictures is a female, judging by the size. I've had the same pictures on my computer for a while just to help me keep some perspective in regards to this animal. They're beautiful, sure, but deserve a LOT of respect.

That's right, it was an impala.

Still, I don't think most people would want to get close to a rock python of that size unless it was dead. They're notoriously, um, cranky.

I can't handle mine anymore, he's just too wild, thrashing and striking and musking...even my old tried and true glove trick wouldn't work (give him one of my old gloves to grow used to my scent).

Then again, the one I have is a special rescue case, it was previously abused and will probably never trust humans. The prior owner would grab on to his tail and swing the snake around his head! He's in jail now.

Damon, that RP is by far my favorite of your animals. If you ever find you have no room, I'll MAKE room for that one Rocks are my favorite large snake.
