Chinese Fire-Bellied newts Pics
Here is one of my new Chinese Fire Bellied Newts. This is the biggest one out of the three. I have to keep him separate because he attacks anything that moves, including the other two newts.

Here is the Chinese fire-bellied newt that I've had the longest. He/she, went terrestrial long ago. I don't think he noticed his two new friends, who now live in the water.

Your newts are looking great lol, I like the floating puzzle piece Just how big is that guy? He just looks so big, and he's so smooth and brown. Makes me wonder if he's not Cynops cyanurus instead. The odds of that are slim, but it would be neat. You don't have any pics of his belly and tail do you?

Yes, I've got pictures of his tail and belly somewhere. He is about 5.5 inches from the top of his head to the end of his tail. I set a ruler next to the aquarium to measure him when he goes vertical, but I haven't been able to catch a picture of him next to it yet.
You can kinda see his belly in this picture.
Here is a the best picture I can find of his tail. He is the one on your right.
Here is a headshot.

Ssativa, with your permission I'd like to submit your pics to some newt specialists I know and see if they can confirm his species. If he is indeed a chinese, he's the weirdest one I've ever seen, and he definately doesn't look japanese either. If he is actually some other species of Cynops, you're one of the very very few people in the U.S. that have one.

Permission granted, of course. I would love to have an experts opinion on the species of my newt. I would feel much better about the odd size and shape of this newt if he is supposed to look this way.

Oh my gosh! I can't believe I didn't see it! I was so hung up on your newt being Cynops, I didn't even consider other genera. No wonder he looks so weird. He's Pachytriton *****tus The aggression, the large size, smooth brown skin, long rounded tail, and those "bulldog lips" of his were all DEAD GIVE-AWAYS. lol, I'm still hitting myself over the head on that one. His common names include Unterstein's newt, spotless stout newt, and "paddle-tailed newt" (pet trade only). The correct name would be Understein's newt. You have a rare find in the U.S, and so healthy! I'm jealous!
Edit: ok, I never did like the censor thingy, but now I REALLY don't like it. The species is l a b I a t u s.

Did you bookmark Caudata.org last time I posted a link? Here's two pages from there that have some good info on IDing fire-bellieds, and on P. *****tus.

Thanks so much. The other two must be the same because I got them at the same store at the same time from the same tank. The other two are just smaller still. There are definite differences in the faces of the two new newts compared to that of my Chinese Fire-belly newt. I wonder if it is okay to house Paddle Tails with a Chinese Fire-belly newt. There have been no problems so far because China stays on the land and the new guys stay in the water. Hey, I just got a good name for my Chinese FBD from a typo I made, China. It's time for me to do some more research. Thanks for all of the useful information. Now I at least know what species to research. Thanks again!
