Reptile Zoo Visit

Today is my one year anniversary of keeping herps, so the sweetie my boyfriend is took me to go see the reptile zoo in monroe, wa.... Now after all my questions about how they keep their herps, and finally being satisfied... I was able to enjoy myself and take some pics.....

The albino monocled cobra (the one I came to see)

A pretty gaboon viper (I wanted to taker her home when I went up to her tank, she perked up, was lookin away at me.... She stole my heart)

A crazy big frog the size of a gallon of milk on its side

Albino diamond rattle snake

There was tons of cool critters, I was asked if I wanted a photo with the little albino burm, I told the lady I already had a ton with mine....
One guy asked if I wanted to hold a ball python and I said no, not really, I dont want to bring something back to my snakes at home and he looked at me like I was just nuts lol... It was fun tho, I was a kid in a candy shop. The owner there was talking to me and I mentioned one day wanting a full blowen rescue facility, and he was telling me that he started out as a back yard rescue, and that aprox. 80% of his animals were rescues, given to him by herp societys and humane societys...

Re: Reptile Zoo Visit

Yea, they were all really awesome critters, If would have been able to leave with a snake, I would have such a hard time picking just one. Oh and all the venomous snakes had surgery to remove the venom...kinda sad, but at lease there is no room for error there.

Re: Reptile Zoo Visit

So you got to talk to Scott, or the one who helps run the zoo?
He had to have the venom removed because he does all the shows at the schools around here. Did you get to see Lucy the caimen? She is really tame I love holding her, lol. Did you go out back and see the millions of sulcatas he has?
Okay enough questions, lol. Some of the iguanas I have in here came from him,, they were dumped on his porch also, lol

Re: Reptile Zoo Visit

I didnt get a name but he said he was the owner so probably. That is really cool that he had them de venomed because of the shows. I never asked why, cause Im sure he has his reasons. I really love the fact most of his critters are rescues. Was a good enough cause for me to buy a bunch of stuff from the gift shop lol. I did see the all the sulcatas, they had one no bigger than two chicken eggs. I see now, why people buy them they are so cute and small... and Im sure they dont think they get all that big.... Very awesome trip tho, and very affordable...

Re: Reptile Zoo Visit

I used to really dislike the idea of a venomous snake being devenomed (venomoid). But have since come to realize, that in many cases it really is more responsible to do so. In the wild the snakes need their venom, but they are not in the wild, they are with a keeper, the keeper provides for them, and if they provide for them properly, the snakes don't need their venom. So I can understand why some keepers have the snakes devenomed. Especially when the snake is being used to edjucate people.

Re: Reptile Zoo Visit

Yea, thats pretty much how I feel. I still think its sad, but education is an absoult necessary when it comes to the herp world, and if thats what it takes to do it safely, then thats what it takes. I wonder how its done... can anyone find me an artical? Cant seem to find much...
