The 18-55 is a good little lens. A lot of people bash on it, but for the price you can't go wrong.
I would also advise you pick up the 50mm f/1.8 . It is small, cheap, and amazing. They call it "The plastic fantastic" or the "nifty fifty" It is wonderful for low light and takes amazing portraits and it only set me back $75 USD.

The guy I bought them from is a small monitor breeder of 3-4 different species. He's been very helpful and I call on him for advice quite often. Ackies are supposed to be one of those bulletproof species were you can't go wrong. But there is quite a bit to keep an eye on if you want them to thrive over just being alive.
