OK, so today (1-6-07), I took a window out of my house and was installing a door there. I'm changing the wood siding while I'm at it.

While taking the old siding off, I saw a HUMONGOUS skink. This sucker was about 9 inches long and almost as big around as a toilet paper roll. I tried to grab him, but he was gone in a flash. A shame really, what a picture he would make.

Well, I'm done for the night and just got finished putting the tools away. All I had left to do was cover up the stack of wooden siding with plastic in case of rain. This is where everything goes downhill. The entire 800 pound stack fell on me. it crashed on to me and I crashed into the rail. The rail went down and so did I....with me on top of the scrapped rail and the wood on top of me. Here I am, with my leg pinned under the stack (IN THE DARK), when a snake crawls out from between the sheets and bites me on the hand.

My wife helps get the wood off of me, and I grab the snake and throw it in a tub in case I have to go to the hospital. I bring him inside and am vastly relieved to see what nipped me.

I actually got a visual...hilarious story....but are you sure its a rat snake? Looks more like a common corn snake.

They call it a corn snake, but it's actually a red rat snake. Scientific name is Elaphe guttata.

Glad to hear you survived the ordeal! Being trapped and then bitten by an unidentified snake would NOT be high on my list of things I would like to have happen!
At least it was harmless species (except for possible damage to your pants!)

Technically it is a cornsnake, but red ratsnake is one of the common local names for them.
And to add to the confusion a couple of years ago the taxonomists changed the latin name from Elaphe guttata to Pantherophis guttatus!
