Hi everyone, first post and I'm sorry it's a health issue.
We have had our dragon for 4 1/2 years. Inside sleeping tank was small 30 gal and I used vermiculite for substrate. Outside gacge was big 10' X 2 ' pine shavings for substrate. She spends most days outside in the sun Everything was fine until about 6 weeks ago. She started having eye problems in her left eye. The "White" part is swollen up and covers her pupil. At first I thought her third eyelid wasn't retracting all the way. Then after a few days the other eye started doing the same thing. I took her to two vets and after meds and antibiotics, blood workup and eye drops nothing has changed. It's been almost a month. I am force feeding her and hydrating her but I need to fix her eyes so she will eat on her own. She can't see the crickets to eat them.
She has alwyas eaten too many crickets and I have learned a lot of mistakes I've make with her through the years from posting on Dragon sites Now she has newpaper in both cages for substrate and if I can get her well will only eat 25 crickets a week and a lot more greens. I am going to attach some pictures. If anyone knows what's going on here please let me know. I'm afraid she is running out of time. Thank you.

Looks like possibly a bit of eye irritation. Try using an eye dropper and water to wash it out. If it doesn't correct it I would talk to your vet.

Nothing has changed in our house. I have taken her to two vets and they don't know what is going on either. I was hoping someone out there has had the same problem and could give some advice, but thank you anyway. The way it progressed from one eye to both makes me think it's a virus. Not much bacteria in the eye when a swab was looked at.

Vermiculite dust can cause numerous health problems. The biggest danger is inhaling it but I suppose if the dust got into your Bearded Dragons eyes it would do damage as well. I wouldn't doubt if it caused an infection.

Bearcat, read this page and see if the symptoms are similar to yours....I'm at a loss as to what it could be but I will continue to look.

I have a question....how long have you had her on newspaper??? Could the problem be caused by the pine shavings or vermiculite...especially if you recently changed it.....welcome to HC Network...and I hope your dragon gets better soon.....

I've talked to several people and nobody thinks it's a vit deficiency but who knows. I would like to think the vet would have noticed if her A or D was low with the blood workup. She lived with vermiculite for 4 1/2 years, and the pine shavings for 1 1/2 year. She has been with paper towel and or newspaper for two months now. I will keep force feeding her until she recovers, hopefully.
Thank you all for what ever help you can provide

I've got a little rescued collared lizard with a similar eye issue, i've been treating her with an antibiotic ointment for her eyes but I have seen little to no progress other than the fact that it lubes the eyes enough that they run rather than crusting over.
Her diet before I took her in consisted solely of meal worms and she was kept at too low of temps with too high of humidty, i've corrected all of those factors and seen her over all health improve but her eyes are still a mess.
Good luck and keep us updated, i'm interested in seeing how this works out...

I was wondering if my dragon's eye problem doesn't get any better don't they have the ability to smell food even if they can't see it? The eye problem is no better but no worse. Very frustrating. I was hoping that by now she would be eating something on her own. It's ben 6 weeks since she has eaten anything on her own.
