My iguanas has a build up of calcium in his urates. Someone suggested a product called flagel to flush it out. Does anyone know where to get this before the problem gets more serious

Welcome to HC We have some very knowledgable iguana owners here that should be able to help you out. Unfortunately, I am not one of them though, but I thought I'd welcome you to the site.

Hello,

I think you are referring to Flagyl. (Not sure, so I am commenting on Flagyl and not your original spelling.)

I personally have not heard of using Flagyl to flush out excess calcium in an iguana. To my knowledge, Flagyl is used for treating parasites (protozoans). Calcium deposits are not parasitic, so I don't see how using a parasite drug would benefit your ig.

I don't know who told you to use Flagyl (Metronidazole), but you may want to look into this further before you administer a drug that is designed for treating certain parasites.

What did your vet suggest?

I agree. Flagyl is an anti parasitic. Sounds like you may be getting medical advice from someone that has no idea what they are talking about.
How do you know that there is a calcium build up?

Hi Igmom.Welcome to Herp Center

...could you tell us more about your iguana...like housing set up, what you feed her and why you think its calcium buildup??? how old is your iguana? How big? Type of UVB lamps etc....

Could your iguana be going through breeding season??? this causes lack of eating/drinking and can cause a difference in the urates....best wishes and let us know whats going on...Lyn

What do the urates look like? Are they thick, white, discoloured or loose and watery? Diet, hydration, health and hormones (breeding season) all play a role in what the urates and stool look like.

How long have you had your iguana? What are you feeding it and how often - and does it eat all it's food? Does it pass stool and urates every day? How are you housing your iguana- cage? size of cage? Lighting (basking, uvb?), heating (temp range please).

Iguana's more often suffer from low calcium levels due to improper diet, housing and heating. The most accurate way to find out your iguana's calcium levels (and phosphorus etc) is to take your ig to a vet that specializes in the care of reptiles and have it's blood tested. You could also bring in a sample of the urates and a stool sample while you are at it and having it examined for disorders- like parasite infection.

Do you have a reptile vet? Do you need a recommendation for one in your area?

Tell us more- we are here to help.
