YOU came here and asked for advice, you were given the advice, but it was not what you wanted to hear...too bad!
Not having enough coverage in his tank will stress him out, I think you need to do a bit more research. These guys do not sit around in open fields in the wild, why would they feel safe doing so in captivity. They need cover!
As for your other comments, I work in rescue, rehabilitation and education, I have seen far more than you can imagine, have seen animals with "dead tails" die within hours because their irresponsible owners didn't feel that they needed to see a vet, have spent my time, energy and money to get animals healthy because Irresponsible owners thought they knew what they were doing and didn't listen to the advice given them.
Newspaper is perfectly fine for use in reptiles, the ink is soy based and does not put off "fumes" to make you feel better I currently have paper towel in all of my reptile cages!
I have a very hard time believing that his tail healed up, but miracles do happen... he will still have the toxins in his blood, but you don't want to hear that.
