I'm just getting back into the Herp ownership field, back in the 1970's I had a very large collection of herps.

My wife just bought me a baby female Grey banded King, which has re-ignited a passion I once had. Just went out and spend more money on Bandits home, added some scenery more for our benifits than hers probably .http://www.herpcenter.com/newthread....ewthread&f=87#

Anyways, now for my question!

I have been reviewing various website dedicated to Herps, (wish this was available back in the 70's) I am wondering what herp owners are doing towards providing vitamin/mineral suppliments for their herps, in particular snakes.

Just before Christmas I started noticing that my king was yawning and shacking it's head and seemed to be having breathing difficulty. From what I have discovered She may have picked up a respiratory infection. The good news is that most of the symptoms seems to have past and she has been a very keen eater.

Any suggestions would be greatly accepted.

Hi Bill! Its generaly accepted that snakes do not need supplementation. Since they consume whole organisms, including the material in the prey's stomach, they get all they need from the prey animal.
It does indeed sound like there might have been a slight resp infection. Keep an eye on your temps and watch for any sign of it recurring.

one of the easiest methods now is to use frozen/thawed mice to feed. Back in the 70's we all fed live mice/rats to our snakes while not realizing the parasites they contain. Freezing the food will kill the parasites and will make one less problem to worry about

Not to mention the reduced risk of rodent bites for your snake! For some reason F/T mice just don't seem to bite as hard

Yeah, as long as the mice were on a good diet prior to your snake eating them, no supplements should be needed.
