Unlucky night
Well my children's python managed to weasel his way out of his tank (even with a 10 gallon tank on each side) about a week and a half ago. I looked everywhere for him every day and couldn't find him. Well last night I came home and I found him in the bathtub, which isn't a good place since its cold and the window is drafty right above the tub. I thought he was dirty but when I picked him I noticed that he was burned on about half of his body. He was also very cold so the only thing I could do that night was to put him in a cage without any rough edges and keep the temp up to avoid a respiratory infection. The good news is that he is still pretty active. He is a very inquisitive snake (curiosity burned the snake?) and when I picked him up he was fairly active in flicking his tongue. I couldn't sleep last night because I was worried and felt like a bad mom to him so I checked on him often and he was moving around. Well he was moving the part of him that wasn't burned. He occasionally moves the burnt part of him and you see him kind of move his tail. This morning I watched him take a drink and once I clean him up and address is wounds I think he should be okay. I'm going to try and get ahold of a another vet since the one I use here is gone and I'm 8 hours away from the one I use in Hot Springs. Here are some pictures I took last night. He is still a little dirty and I'm going to get some clean water to get rid of the soot and stuff.
If anyone knows what I can do while I look for a vet please let me know. I am sick with what has happened and I can't lose him. |

Re: Unlucky night
Find some Silvadene cream and slather his wounds with it. Burns are nasty and open them up to all kinds of infection, find a good vet so they can assess how deep the burns are.

Re: Unlucky night
I think he may have found his way to the furnace or the water heater as both run on gas. I thought I smelled burning yesturday morning but it seemed more like a dust buildup in the furnace when you first turn them on. Sometimes the gas isn't pure and it makes that smell. It didn't smell like burning flesh but then again I don't know what burning snake smells like. I feel so bad right now, like I did something horribly wrong. Where can I get silvadene cream because according to some sites it has to be by prescription.

Re: Unlucky night
You pretty much have to get it from a Dr. Try calling your family physician or the local pharmicy.
And the problem with burns on reptiles is that they don't feel heat quite the same way we do and can lay against the thing burning them and not realize it and damage internal organs.

Re: Unlucky night
or even try calling a vet to see if they can get you some. Even if it isn't a reptile vet they should know that Silvadine is what to use on burns and hopefully won't give you any problems about getting it...

Re: Unlucky night
Poor snake. Keep changing the newspaper substrate, the cleaner it is the less the risk of infection.

Re: Unlucky night
Thanks. If all else fails I will have my Dr. Grandma call in a prescrip. Hopefully a vet around here can get me some. I really appreciate the help. What would I do without this site??? He still is moving around and drinking water which I take as a good sign.
