Herp Meds!!!

Ok- I have an opportunity to get some things ordered for the rescue by my vet. the problem is- I have NO idea what all I need.... I get a ton of URI's and know about amikacin but would like to have another kind of antibiotic as well.
I also need something that I can treat URIs in tortoises/turtles as well.
I also need something I can de-worm them with.
I also need some kind of calcium shot (i've done oral but it doesnt really go over so well)

I dont know if theres something that will help an iguana/lizard/etc get fatter, faster or not.

anyway- if someone can perhaps give a good list of these things- i'd much appriciate it!!

thanks!
Beth

Re: Herp Meds!!!

um, shouldn't your vet know what you should need? I mean, could you tell him what the biggest ailments are and then have him order based on that?

Re: Herp Meds!!!

Metronidazole (flagyl) and Febendazole (panacur) are both used for deworming.

Ivermectin is sometimes used for internal parasites, but it is very dangerous to use and I would avoid using it. It needs to be administered in extremely high doses to be effective, and can actually cause more harm than good. (Especially if incorrectly dosed.)

Sulfadimethoxine (albon) - Treats coccidia.

The issue you really face though is the dosing. Every reptile is going to be different as it goes by weight. I hope your vet is going to supply dosing instructions as well.

Re: Herp Meds!!!

Wow, a lot of things come to mind. Most of all, do you have vet support for dosages, and what can be combined medication wise. We have used a variety of meds, but most have been "with vet instruction". Although not always a vet visit. Many items are off label or special use in reptiles. Your vet should be able to guide you. You have to be very careful of dosages in different reptiles. Good luck.

Re: Herp Meds!!!

this is a bit hard to explain. The vet thats getting the meds for me isn't my reptile vet- hes our dog vet. he doesnt know much of anything about reptiles- besides what i've told him. He said he can order the meds and keep them on hand at his clinic for me. I have to find the dosing directions myself which isn't hard.

my reptile vet is very expensive, i've spent over 2k every month for close to the last 2 years- we just cant do it anymore. office visit is 45 $ plus meds and follow ups and YIKES! when youre talking about anywhere from 5-15 animals a month that need to see the vet- it adds up FAST.

anyway- my dog vet is tired of hearing me ***** about how much I spend at the herp vet and wants to help me out (with a little encouragement of course). I've been iwth the same dog vet for years- far longer than the reptile vet but after so long with no discount- we just cant do it anymore.
Its either, take the offer from my dog vet or slow down or quit the reptile rescue all together- to continue what I love dearly- i'll take the offer!!

thanks for the list, i'm working on doses...

Beth

Re: Herp Meds!!!

I have found some dosing lists online before, but that's stuck in my old computer. We also have some books on reptile diseases and the doses, but am not sure where it is at the moment. I will look for it.

Re: Herp Meds!!!

Beth have you considered contacting the Veterinary college in Stillwater? I don't know that it would do you any good but its worth a shot.

Re: Herp Meds!!!

I really don't condone self medicating with off label instructions and dosages that you found on the internet.
Have your mammal vet consult with area exotic vets to get dosages or call the exotic vet yourself and ask for dosing for each species you expect to treat.
Trusting what you read on the internet can be dangerous to he health of your animals.

Re: Herp Meds!!!

thank you! i didnt even think about calling the stillwater college- i'll be going there next year myself.
I dont plan on "self medicating"- i can get the doseing directions from my vet, he said he would call the exotic vet and get all the info. he also has his own 'vet' sources he can check- that are far more reliable than the internet.

i just needed a good basic list of the meds i'll need for the order. i've gotten all kinds of stuff before but dont have my papers anymore- and I never made a list... (duh! i'm so stupid sometimes)

thanks
