Actually cypress mulch is quite safe as long as you are getting just cypress mulch and not the red chemically dyed stuff. It is used by a number of people who keep ball pythons. It has the advantage of being moisture absorbant so it will help to hold humidity. However it is quite coarse and chunky so there would be a problem with crickets disappearing into a thick layer of it.

Ah, yes I've seen that stuff. I'll keep that in mind. I've used non-dyed cypress before, but I'm very anti pine and cedar, and since they too are conifers, it made me nervous. Cypress doesn't have a piney smell though, and isn't even in the same family, so it shouldn't surprise me that it doesn't share the same properties.
