Shedding problems and possibly tail rot...

My Mail Uromastyx, after his battle back to health, is still having some problems. First of all, I can't get him to shed for ****. I've given him a warm bath, and tried to help it along with a pair of tweezers, but some of it is so stuck on there that it's just flat not coming off. I've also noticed that the "spikes" on his tail have started coming off. I've read that it's probably just layers upon layers of shed that haven't come off, but I want to be sure. Here's a few pictures. Sorry for the crappy quality, my camera is junk. Let me know what you all think, and by all means, if this is tail rot, SPREAD THESE PICTURES! As there is next to none available online right now.

Its hard for me to say whats going on with the tail by those pics....and you are doing the right thing soaking for the shed...be careful with the tweezers though....maybe a checkup at the vets is in order....oh and welcome to HC Network.....

Hi Robbie, welcometo HCN. It looks like it might need a topical antibiotic, I too would suggest a vet visit.

Re: Shedding issue

Hard to tell from the pics, but sounds like a shedding issue. Too many layers and it is possible they will take the tail spikes with them. I've had this happen to a couple spikes on one of mine. It also had a dehydration problem when I got it so that didn't help.

Here's how to help it shed better though it may still take time for it to soften. At least once if not twice daily put on a thin coating of triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin or generic works too. Anywhere it has skin shed issues and it will soften it up so it will either fall off or you can get it gently. If you pull too much on the tail spikes before they're ready the spike will come off too. Don't worry if they bask after you put it on it actually helps. When it heats up that helps it soak in better.

Good luck,
Kenn

It;s really hard to tell the pics are fuzzy and really dark. It kinda looks like it's missing part of his spikes on the tail which in a case could be tail rot, but it could just be missing that from another time, so I don't really know what to sat until you would past better pics, or if you take it to the vet. Thanks
