carpet, hides, humidity box
Hey, I've been thinking about using carpet. How many strips do most people have and how do you clean it? (Do you just scrub the dirt off or soak it). How long do the strips usually last and how easy is it to clean? Will a under the tank heater work through carpet? What kind of carpet is best? (which one's don't fall appart)
At the moment I'm just wondering because I would imagine that it's a lot cleaner then reptile bark. I'd like to get rid of the bark but I'm still kind of sketchy about it (Joe loves to dig so I think I need some kind of creative hide if I do the carpet thing) Also...If you guys have any pictures of your humidity boxes can you post pics of them for some ideas? And what do you use aside from peat moss? Thanks |

The carpet most refer to is sold in petstores, not the carpet you have in the living room. It looks alot like indoor/outdoor carpeting. Most keepers buy 2 for each enclosure so one can be kept clean while the other is in use. We wash ours in the sink with anti-bacterial dish soap and rinse well at least 3 or 4 times.

I'm pretty possitive they do not sell that at any of the pet shops here. I seen on someones post (not sure if it was here or not) that they bought carpet at walmart, is that ok?

I use carpet in all my cages with my snakes dragons and iquanas . The only problem I ever have is some like to get underneath and hide.Heat pads do come through the carpet . I usally have about 2 to 3 extra cut to fit . I purchase mine at home depot or lowes indoor outdoor carpet not the plastic kind . You would have to wash it in a washer 3 or 4 times at first to remove the backing it comes off when washed turns into a powder and runs off . An automotive type from walmart or a parts store works the same without the backing . I wash mine in the washer when dirty . I have never had a problem with useing it its cleaner and doesn't attrat parrasites . Hope this helps.

I just switch my Iggy carpet to floor tile for easier clean up. I use paper towels in the rest of the cages.
HC has instructions on how to make a moist hide. I made them so they have to be easy.. http://www.herpcenter.com/showthread.php?t=7193 |

The rug with the rubber backing doesn't usually come off.The indoor outdoor carpet at lowes or home depot has a hard rough backing that ends up breaking down when washed . Also don't run in dryer they shrink so let them air dry .
