Re: Help Needed Designing a Reptile Room!
Wow. What a response. Thank you all, Merlin, JMM, & ryanp.
So, after your input, I am adjusting the enclosure sizes to be as follows: (Lenght x Width x Depth) Redtail Boa - 8'x3'x2.5' Ball Python - 4'x2'x2' Brazilian Rainbow Boa - 4'x2.5'x3' Jungle Carpet Python - 4'x2.5'x3' Everglades Rat - 2.5'x2'x3' I planned on building the enclosures out of 3/4" Melamine, with a set-in section of glass which would have a reptile heat pad underneath. I also plan on heating the entire basement. I will have to fabricate a protective casing around the baseboard which will let the heat out, yet prevent an escapee from hurting itself. The room will be simple with one door in (with a rubber sillplate), one closet of shelves, and a 4' utility sink for soaks, and cleaning. The Redtail will have her own 2'x2'x2' soak sink as part of the enclosure, hooked up to the other sinks drain line. I will need to look into finding some sort of snake proof drain stopper. I will also need to give more thought to basking lamps and location of the same. I have built my own individual tank humidifiers and will need to encorporate them into the enclosures as well. I spent today sealing the cement walls to prevent outside dampness, framing in the room's walls, and sheet-rocking them. I still need to tape and mud the walls. I figure that a 12'x9' room should be just fine. The room is 8' tall. I can't wait to get it done. Now that the bulk of the construction is over, I will need to start concentrating on all the details for each reptiles health and well being. Thank you all once again. I am always open to advice. Please, keep it coming. One can never know it all! I have a motto that I would like to include at the end of each of my postings, but I don't know if I am able to or how to even do so. My motto is: If you can't afford the Vet, you shouldn't own the pet! Ziggy, |

Re: Help Needed Designing a Reptile Room!
I too would recommend using regular 3/4 cabinet grade plywood as well. Melamine is nothing but wood dust and glue. It is very heavy and if dampness gets into it it will deteriorate and begin to weaken and come apart. The plywood is a bit more work but is much more durable. With something as strong as a large red tail you do NOT want weak spots developing in your enclosure walls!
And you can stain it any color you want to to be! The only melamine available around here is a glaring white! Quote:
