an odd solution to a bug problem

I have an infestation of fruit flies in my vivarium. I didn't want to use any chemicals for obvious reasons. I got to thinking about my friend and her dog. She feeds her dog garlic a few times a week, to keep the fleas and ticks off.

I chopped up some garlic, put it in my water spray bottle and gave the vivarium a good soaking last night.

Woke up this morning, no bugs!!

although my dining room smells kinda funny

Hmm... I didn't know garlic did that. That's a great solution to your problem.

I don't know I would have tried it if there were frogs in there, but for now this is a great solution. Of course if I had frogs, they would just EAT the fruit flies!

Garlic: keeping flies and vampires out of herp enclosures since 1987. (of course I just made up the year)

Glad to hear the flies are gone! I don't know that they'd be fruit flies though, but probably something similar. Fruit flies like fruit. No fruit means you ought not to have fruit flies. You probably had fungus gnats or phorid flies. The former are harmless, though annoying. The latter will eat many small animals, and any other organic material.

Re: an odd solution to a bug problem

its the latter then. I had them in a different house plant for a while and that plant was NOT doing very well during that time. I guess they didn't all die when I sprayed pesticide, they just moved on...
