Those gophers didn't die from any natural causes. They were slaughtered by poachers. There has always been a demand for gopher meat here in the southeast. Florida has one hellnacious ordinance with them. If you are having a home built here in Fl. and someone see a gopher hole on the property, construction is halted until the landowner pays about $500 for a relocation permit and hires a licensed gopher tort. relocator. If you are driving down the road and see one crossing the road, do not get out of or off of your vehicle and so much as pick him up to get him off the road. Touching one of them will get you one hefty fine and up to a year in the grey bar motel. So they poach them and get rid of the remains in the middle of the forest.
