snake feeding
I got a king snake last week and it should've had a mouse on friday but refuses the mice that I try to give it. I've been trying everything that I can think of but nothing's working. I know it's had prekilled mice before, but just ignores them now. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to HC Network!
Probably your kingsnake is still getting used to his new home. It can cause a lot of stress on the animal (even if it's not obvious to you). You should give it a week or two to settle in -- not much handling or disturbing before trying to feed it. Does it have hiding places in your enclosure? It should have one on the warm side and one on the cool side of the terrarium. A few things can affect appetite: Are the temperatures in the terrarium correct for your species? Is the snake under stress? (new home, too much handling, noise, not enough hiding places?) Is the snake going into shed? (if the color looks dull and the eyes look a bit cloudy, he could be starting a shed phase and not want to eat until after the shed.) Try not to worry. Snakes can go quite some time without eating and still be fine. When you feed it: try feeding in the evening. Make sure the mouse is warm enough (if necessary you can heat it up with a hair dryer). If you have feeding tongs, just wiggle the mouse around about 2-5 inches away from the snake. When he's hungry, he'll eat. When he poops, take it into the vet and have a parasite test done. (This should be done on every new animal.) Good luck!

Yep the most frequent cause of a new snake refusing to feed is owner harrassment!
![]() When you get a new snake you should place it in its enclosure, preferably in a quiet location and leave it alone for a couple of weeks! I know its hard! You're hyped up over your new treasure and can't wait to get your hands on it. But you have to be patient. Its better in the long run for all parties involved!

Well it's good to know she's not going to starve anytime soon. How long would it take? I really don't want to kill my snake like that. I don't think it's stress making her not eat. I haven't tried picking her up yet and she seems to be acting the same as when she was at the store. And she doesn't look like she's shedding to me. Do young snakes need to eat more regularly? Because I'm not sure how old she is, but she's only fourteen or fifteen inches and I was told she'd grow to about five feet. And thank you for the advice.

Don't worry. Snakes can go an outrageously long time without eating. Several months in fact!
You should try to feed your snake about once a week. Do you have hides in the cage? Often with prekilled you have to take a pair of tongs and wiggle the mouse around. Tell us about your cage setup, temperatures etc.

i would say he/she is still settling in. give him about a week to settle in and get used to his new home. he'll come around when he feels more secure and start feeding.
