shed didn't come off?

OK Joe's last shed was pretty aweful and he looked fine except when I saw him the other day and light was hitting him a certain way, he looked like he had a funny patch of skin so I took him out and it looked like dead skin so I put him in the sink and let him soak for a while and I did that for a couple days and it still didn't come off so I heard about people using tape so I have this tape that isn't to sticky so I put that over the little patch and let him move away and I got a couple pieces so that was fine. I put him in to soak again and put him back in the tank. Now he has a dry looking patch of skin that isnt as shinny as the rest...I just wanted to know if I did something wrong and if that dry patch will grow back after a couple sheds and if I should put anything on it (ie polysporn)?

i'm not too sure since I haven't had that happen but I think you were on the right track with the soaking. you could have also tried putting him in a pillowcase with some damp towels and let him slide through those. i don't think I would've used the tape though, i never heard of that. i just wouldn't think tape plus snake was a good idea. hopefully someone else will be along to give you a better answer.

Do not use tape. Your best bet is to put him in a damp towel and place the towel/snake in a pillowcase. Tie the pillowcase so he can't escape, as he tries to wiggle his way out, the old shed will rub on the damp towel. This has worked for quite a few of our members.

It should come off while he's in the pillow/towel

It could be very irritated because from what I know you aren't supposed to force the shed off by peeling or ripping. It will probably heal, I don't know if people use neosporine on snakes but I used it on my lizards when they'd get a wound of any kind.

The "dry spot" is prolly what Beth said, irrated skin. It should heal up fine, you may want to limit handeling him for the next couple of weeks, give him a chance to heal.

A while back my poor snake got his head stuck to a piece of fresh electrical tape, and when I removed it it took a good patch of scales with it. After my heart rate returned to normal and I stopped beating myself over the head, I took him to the vet.

Long story short... It does't sound like you did anything near as tramatic to your baby, however I would recomend a little dab of Silvadene Cream, found in most drug stores, every other day. It is used on burns and other skin problems in humans, and was suggested by my vet. It will keep the skin soft and help with infections and bacteria.

Also, when applying, the container should remain sterile. I would get a small container of new Q-Tips, and make sure not to touch the ends before you use them, or the inside of the container.

Good luck with Joe! I'm sure he will be just fine.
