Unknown Snake
Good afternoon, fellow forumites. I got a new snake today!
heres the story: A close friend of mine came to school with a new very cool snake and he told me he could not keep it and asked me if I could. I, excited, agreed on the snake. Wich is (I believe) a black rat snake its 40cms long im guessing 18 inches (?) and I have it right now at my fish's aquarium (the fish moved to a fish bowl), the thing that i'm reluctant about is that it has some red spots under the black part of the face. any help? greetings. |

Hello,
Welcome to the HC Network! Pictures would help us help you identify the species and then offer proper care advice and answer your question about the spots. |

hello welcome!!,
if you cannot post a picture of him I just need more details, i love identifiing herps. where are you located? state? i could probably identify it but I would need a better description, a black snake at 18 inches would be a hatchling most likely and the hatchlings are vividly blotched so if it is a solid color on its upper body it is probably not a black snake, now you say under the black part of his head do you mean like his chin or a mask sort of red spots? what color is its belly and if there are markings what shape and color?might also find out where he got or found the snake. some good news, from what you have given I can only think of 3 kinds at the moment without more info but it will give you something to look up and compare to, the first is an indigo snake, the second, mud snake{young},third a swamp snake, thats all I got going on what I think is red spotted or blotched underside of head, so if those dont fit, well details details details![]() |

Are the red spots stationary, or mobile? Because if they start moving congratulations you've got mites! (not a good thing)
Try taking a wet q-tip and rubbing the spots to see if they come off. Also, is this your first herp?

If the snake is wild caught, it will help to know what state you're in to narrow down the species. Also, what size is the tank you put it in?
