This sounds serious, if he is as near and dear to you as you say you would take him to the vet as soon as possible. Amphibians are really hard to treat so he should be seen by someone with experience. good luck and keep us updated.

What species of toad is it and what are the specifics on his/her habitat? It could possibly be an infection of some sort, but I've gotten rusty in my amphibian veterinary knowledge. He could also possibly have something lodged in his throat, but those are two very different problems. Knowing more details might help narrow down what's wrong.

Wow my frog at one time had this same thing and he did have something in his throat it was a baby pinkie. I got it out for him by well his mouth was all ready open so I took some twesers and got it out for him. And then he was fine. So check and see if he might have the same thing wrong with him. Holly

hes an american toad, i looked in his throat and there is nothing I could see I will look again though. i dont know when he last defacated, his substrate is just dirt, the humidity I dont know, he did seem to have some liquid coming out of his nose though. i have had a frog do this before and I couldnt figure out what was wrong and he well, died. should I maek it humid for him? there is not vet anyhwhere neart here that could help an amphibian and we really cant afford to travel 300 miles and pay a vet bill hes only 2 years old so hes small, and every time I try to look in his mouth he does his best to close it...hes pretty good at it too. should I take the soill out and put newspaper down for the time being? if hes constipated what do I do to help that? the temp in my room is about 72 farenhiet so his enclosure is about the same.
i hope all these detailes help you I will look in his throat again and check back in tomarrow Thanks you guys! |

well I think hes feeling better, i used tweezers last night and he had some of his shedding skin in his throat I pulled it out, made him drink some water, fed him a small mealworm and put him in a quarantine tank with newspaper for substrate. i called a vet and she said they would have to see him to know whats wrong. the vet is about 5 hours away and my gramma will not take him to the vet, we cant afford it. hes still doing the mouth thing and he still hasnt defacated but hes more active today. i dont know what else can be done, if he is constipated how do I treat that?

i am located in doniphan missouri. i put a heating mat under one half of his tank and put his water on that side he pooped a very small amount,it looked more liquid than solid. and hes spending alot of time on the side with trhe heating mat and in his water,i fed him some crix he ate 2 of the 4 right then and the other two dissapeared later on, his chin looks swollen, not like hes calling but hes just holding it pushed out more than usual. can amphibians be treaded for constipation with mineral oil? i read they could but I want to make sure, i think he may have something wrong there and in his mouth. he is doing better though hes more active and eating I think he is drinking he been in his water alot.other than that I have found 2 vets in mo that work with amphibians one in belton, and another about 3 hours away I cant remember the name of the town though.i just dont know what else to do for him/her
