Water
Hi all,
I bought a couple gallon jugs of spring water on the intent of refilling them with tap water. I've read that it takes about 24 hours for the water to dechlorinize. Do I have to leave the jugs of water open to dechlorinize or can I screw the tops on? Thanks in advance for you comments!

I would leave the tops off and expose it to direct sunlight as sunlight degrades chlorine. If you want to have faster results, get a Brita pitcher and filter the water. This is what we do for our emeralds and it works great.

Although this method will remove chlorine, it will not remove chloramines or heavy metals, so I just prefer to use a water conditioner.

I use Repti-safe water conditioner, it's really cheap and you only need a little of it to dechlorinate the water.

I'm pretty sure the milk jug HDPE will block the UV and will also break down with exposure to the UV. Time is proven to allow treated water to offgas most of what has been added to it. I am sure what ever jugs you have on hand will work. As I see it surface area is a critical thing here which is why the air stone was mentioned above.

Just to clarify.
If your city uses Chloramine (chlorine bonded to ammonia)as opposed to regular chlorine, sitting it out in the open will not work. You have to use a chemical that breaks the chlorine/ammonia bond. Chloramines are ususaly used in places that get their water from surface reservoirs. I was keeping fish when our city switched over to chloramines many years ago without telling anyone. There was a class action lawsuit considered due to the large numbers of ornamental fish that were killed.
