I have never heard of either being used. You can semi tame a snake, but I dont thing you can ever prevent it from biting.

I have heard of using alcohol for an iguana if it bites but its not a preventative, it is to get the ig to let go after it has bitten you. Can't help on the surgical spirit though.

I have no idea what "surgical spirit is". The recommendation for using rubbing alcohol is to get the snake to release if it bites and holds on and tries to swallow(feeding response). My suggestion before about wiping alcohol on your hands was to ensure that you didn't have any prey type smell about you.
Unfortunately some snakes are just biters. I have a California King that just loves to nail me.
Yet my lady can handle her without problem.

Hello,
I have never used surgical spirit (at least not to my knowledge) so I am not exactly certain if it is safe. Alcohol I have heard of and have used, but not for bites. (I have used it for cleaning wounds caused by scratches and bites though. lol)
If a snake bites, you can use a touch of alcohol to make it release. It will never prevent a snake from biting you however. If the snake is biting, it needs to be handled differently. Most captive snakes are fairly tame or can be with proper handling.
Make note not to handle any animals prior to handling the snake. It may taste the scent on you and strike out of a feeding response. You also want to make certain the snake knows you are in the area before you just reach in and grab him/her. If you startle an animal, it may bite as a defense.

Well we also don't go to the chemist's too often over here also. Well I do that everytime I go to my mom's as her husband is a chemist with an ag-chem company but not the same idea. Anyway.
Look over the label for indications of what this liquid actually is. We have Rubbing Alcohol sold all over here in the USA (about $0.45 for 16 oz) but this is just a colqual name for it. Really it is a 70% isopropyl solution sold for the purpose of first aid antiseptic.
