What is that stuff?
OK- I'm a mammal gal. My son wanted a gecko. We got one. He's (I say "he" but I really have no idea - maybe she?) anyway, it's got 2 little beads of a clearish / whitish goopy stuff coming from each side of the vent. It constanly licks at it. Otherwise seems to be perfectly normal. Eating, drinking, active, sleeping...What gives? Should I go to the vet? Is this common? Anyone ever heard of this? I can't seem to find any info anywhere aout this. Thanks for your help!

Hello,
What kind of gecko did you buy? Is there a chance that you could shoot a pic of what it is you are talking about? What type of substrate are you using? I too am interested in how often the gecko (really need to know the species) is defecating. At first thought I would say the "gecko" is having a hard time defecating and what you are seeing is urates that have been passed. The licking could be to help get the gecko to defecate. I could be completely wrong though. There really isn't a whole lot to go on here. |

OK - a little more info:
A little more info about him...hmmmm...not being a reptile person, i'm not sure what would be helpful, so I'll try.
Cage setup: He's in a glass aquarium with a large cave to hide in. He has a reptile turf as opposed to sand (he's still young - like 9 months or so). The pet store said he couldn't use the sand until he's an adult because he'll eat it when he eats. Right? He has a heat light during the day to keep his temp around 80-90 degrees. At night he stays between 65-75. Food intake: He still eats almost everyday although as he gets older he's eating less often. He eats mainly crickets. He has decided he doesn't like mealworms of any size. I give him waxworms as well sometimes. I dust all of them with calcium powder from the pet store. Pooping habits: I never actually see him go. He's a private little guy. When he was smaller he went every single day. It has gradually decreased to every other day, but much larger in size. I checked on him this morning and the goop wasn't there. He was his usual lazy self thi morning. It's the only time of day he'll let me handle him. So I flipped him over and he seemed normal. If I wouldn't have checked him last night, I may not have ever seen it. I'll be sure to check him several times today. Any is greatly appreciated. |

Hello,
If the mysterious fluid is no longer present, and he is eating and defecating normally, it could just be a weird occurence. I would monitor his eating and defecation for now. If nothing changes, he is likely all set. |

I agree with Rich, Ive found the easiest way to monitor eating and defecation is to keep an index card next to the enclosure and just write down how much hes eaten and if he defecated. And youre correct to not have him on sand, but I wouldnt put him on sand even as an adult because theres still the risk of him ingesting the sand and becoming impacted.
