Mites
Has anyone used the product mite guard? The red tailed boa that I have came with mites and I need to treat it. The only thing for mites the local petstore had was mite guard so I figured I'd ask you guys about it. It's a "natural" insecticide apparently. The pet store owner said he uses Rid for headlice on his snakes but I won't try anything that doesn't have a good reputation on my animals.
I've already moved the snake cage away from all the other animals in the house and hopefully they won't get any mites but should I treat them for it anyway? My husband finally decided to try and talk to the guy he bought the snake from about getting his money back or turning the guy in for animal neglect. Does anyone know who it is that you turn them into? Even if it's just a slap on the hand.
Anyways, I've read the thread about getting rid of mites and figured I'd ask some questions too. Also, can mites spread to other animals besides reptiles, like cats or humans?
Thanks guys

Oh Beth! I'm so sorry! Mites are terrible! Just clean like you have OCD, down in all of the corners with a toothbrush and hope for the best! I've never used mite guard but i've seen it before...i'm skeptical though. i would probably just save your money and try to do it by the article.

Reptile mites are species specific.
While they may hitch a ride on another animal they will not colonize them.

Will I have to worry about my lizards then? Or just the snakes? I'm in the process of deinfesting so I need to figure out whether everyone needs to be treated or just the snakes.

They will colonize another reptile whether it is a lizard or snake.
They just won't colonize a warm blooded host.

The sad part is I don't think there is a local spca around here. But I will find out who to report him to because he runs the petstore that sold the snake. My husband is going to go in and "reason" with him tomorrow about him taking the snake back and refunding us the money. I don't know how well this will work but it's what he wants to do.

Unless there was some sort of warranty given you really don't have a leg to stand on and are at the mercy of whatever good graces the owner has.And be careful about that "reasoning". You will be in his place of business and if things get out of hand he can have your husband arrested.

I told him to do nothing illegal but tell him that if he wants to stay amiable that he should take the snake back. He's not a big bussiness pet store and he's a really nice guy but he should do the right thing. Plus I think it's illegal to sell sick animals like that in the state of Oregon.
