*very urgent* need advice on near dead leo
Hi!
Today we went out for crickets and ended up getting involved in a very gruesome situation.
One pet store employee thought we had expertise enough to give her some advice regarding this poor leo they had on display. More on this later.
I only saw part of it through the cave opening and it didn't looked good, but when she took it out, I was speechless.
Take a look for yourself.
He has leftover skin on his head, legs and feet. He has fecal matter and God knows what else running down his legs from his cloaca. He's paralyzed, all skin and bone, looking dried and almost mummified. Mouth is dirty like he's suffering from mouth rot. The most weird thing is that he's still alive.
My first reaction was "put him out of his misery" when I noticed he was trying to bite me! Imagine that! If he has still some spirit in him, then maybe he's got some chance.
He can't chew live prey and everything that goes in come out after a while.
What do you think? Is it worth it? Can he recover?
I saw a power recipe based on baby food posted a while back but can't find it...
Thanks for your help guys!

omg! thats horrible! the poor thing, and id like to say thank you for rescuing this little guy, im very impressed and have the deepest respect for you. I dont know too much about Leopard Geckos, but the slury recipe based on crix that I used for my WD that didnt eat for a good month was crix, and mealies blended up with baby food and gatorade. This did wonders for her, Im sure it can be used for a leo too, good luck and keep us posted!!

That is horrible. As Savannah stated a slury mixture might help but by looking at the condition of that poor guy I find it difficult to beleive if he'd make it. If he did survive, the damage to him could be quite severe. Why did this petstore wait so long to do something about that poor Leo ? I personnaly would not be giving them my business but maybe a call to the athorities if that's how they treat there animals. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hello,
He most likely has parasites. I would advise feeding the slurry mix and add waxworms as a regular part of his diet. If he is to survive, you need to put some meat on those bones. He is running on fumes.

Do what savannah said, it's the only thing I can think of. Also, you might try some kind of meat baby food, like chicken or turkey, I don't know how good that is for him but it could be worth a try. Good luck, I hope he makes it.

Stuff I left out my previous post...
Before anyone mention it, I didn't took this animal. Believe it or not, it still carries the same price tag it did when he was healthy, not a penny less. Also hard to believe is that the store prefers to let the animal die than to give it to someone that would take care of him. The store also penalizes its workers for having moral sense and humanity, the store employee that approached us said "I really don't care if I'll get fired [for putting him out of his misery] but I can't stand to see this animal like this for any more time". I have no doubt that she will get fired for doing it, just like other nice employees that had strangely "disappeared" before
When we spoke to her I advised her to take him out of the enclosure he was sharing with another leo because if it was a disease, it could easily infect the other (so far) healthy animal and it would also be easier to treat (in a quarantine enclosure).
We told her we would do our best to help her out, specially regarding the food since he wasn't eating anything for a few months.
She took the necessary material from the shelves (plastic faunarium + Under Tank Heater + UVB tube) and went in while we left. On our way out we noticed her colleagues talking about it in a way we realized that they will burn her in the stake for trying to do something to the poor creature.
So there you have it. A spineless management enforces a nazi work policy that only soulless mindless drones can follow. Any human being will be fired for being human. And I get no comfort from the thought that someone has valued more a little dying leo than her own job.

I would without a doubt call your local animal welfare dept. and voice your concerns with a formal complaint. What these people are doing is animal cruelty.

Seems I'm a slow writer... 6 replies while I typed the post above.
Thanks Savannah and Marsha. I'll recommend the "pedialyte, squash baby food, calcuim withD3, and a multi vitamin" first.
I think I would also recommend she adds some waxies to the invert mix.
Marsha, I'm quite shaken not only to see that poor fellow in such state but also because I felt empathy for that girl that has to deal with that thing everyday. I was quite perplexed to see her colleagues teaming against her when she's doing nothing wrong. With their attitude they let this thing slide downhill for many months until now. From what I could understand, he's not eating since December or less.
Ken, some is explained in my previous post. Depending on that girl's situation, I'm considering calling the authorities. I only go there for crickets when the mailman fails me with my bulk orders so I couldn't care less if they run out of business or not.
It's supposed to be the best store in town =(
Rich, I thought that too but she told me they give them anti-parasite as a preventive measure every 6 months.
Thanks for your help everyone!
