Baby Uromastyx

Just got one a few days ago. Want to make sure we are doing right by it.

It isnt extremely active (burrows most of the day), has only touched his veggies once, LOVES crickets (but we just found out we cant feed him that many), and we arent sure we have seen him poop yet (its been 2 days).

Does it sound like something is wrong?

Hello and welcome to HC. Can you give us some info about your husbandry, ie. temps basking/cool, substrate, age of uro etc.

Welcome to Herpcenter. We have a few Uro folks around that may be ble to help you. Of course as Venus said they will need as much knowledge of the conditions in which the uro is kept.

Yeah!! I love uros!!! How old is your baby; how long is he/she. You are right; uros can't have very many crickets 2 a week max. Too much protein gives them kidney damage. Your temps during the day...cool side 80's, warm side 90's basking spot 120's. At night they can drop as low as the upper 60's, no problem. They do hide alot! Don't worry too much about that. I have found that especially during the winter months, they tend to only be active for about 3 hours during the day 11am-2pm mainly. As far as your veggies....collard greens, mustard greens, endive, sweet peas, carrots, legumes, rose petals, habiscus petals and leaves, alfalfa sprouts and dandelions (flowers and leaves). You can give sweet corn and occasional berries as a treat. Finch seed is good, they really like it but only a couple times a week. They can have iguana pellets dry food as a supplement to thier greens. Are you sprinkling calcium dust on his veggies? I have found with mine and several other uros that they do not like the calcium dust. Try giving him his greens without it and see if it makes a difference. Also, make sure that the food you are feeding can fit in his mouth. I run mine through the food processor for a couple seconds to chop it a little. I dust the crickets and use a calcium spray to mist the veggies. That works better. They really don't eat very much. Maybe a teaspoon at best when they are young. DO NOT leave water in the tank. I can't tell you how many pet stores will tell you to place a water dish in their tank. A big no no. With the way their tails are, they can be prone to tail rot. Mine has gone a few days without pooping. No more than 4. I find that mine likes to poop when I am handling him- maybe he's trying to tell me something. I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. They really are very cool creatures!
