Ball Python Swallowed Dish Soap
Hi, I know im new here and I should say hello, but I have to do that later, im fidgety and worried about my poor Blaze....
I put her in her little bath and added a bit of dish soap, but I got her out a few hours later and the skin under her neck was stretched down, and I felt it and she threw up spit, along with bubbles of Joy dish soap ... Is she okay? On the package it says to swallow water to dilute it, but I dont know if she has had any water... Im worried sick! Please help me! |

Hello and welcome to the herp center, what I would consider one of the most helpful herp help sites on the web.
As for your question. Generally snakes and all other reptiles should be kept clear of dish soap as it can be very harmful to them. The only thing I can think of is to take it to your vet because it could be poisoned. I'm no expert though but that is what I would do, at the moment I too have a ball python that isn't well. I ended up rescueing him. His owners put live rodents in with him and left him alone for a while so he got very badly hurt. Hope your little guy does better, but you really should take him to a vet.

Welcome to HC
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Dishsoap isn't aggressively poisonous: after all we wash our dishes with it and I'm sure not all of it gets rinsed off all the time. Since she threw up, probably a lot came out of her system. If you can get a syringe (no needle) you could put a little water in it and inject some of it into the back of her mouth: make sure to get it way back or enter from the side of her mouth to avoid any getting down her windpipe (located right in front of her mouth). I'm not sure if a vet can do any more than that but you might want to call one and ask. How big is your BP? Age? Weight? Why did you put dishsoap in the water? Does your BP have mites? It's recommended for mite treatment, but just a drop. Always give your snake a chance to drink BEFORE adding dishsoap. (Otherwise, you don't need to bathe your snake in soapy water, it will just dry out its skin too much.) Good luck with this!

Do NOT put dish soap in your snakes bath! There are substances in it that in a concentrated form are dangerous. How much soap did you put in how much water.

The small amount of possible residue that might be left may have no impact on our body mass as well as our systems may be a lot different on that of a small snake.

I don't know about snakes, but when I work at a group home we had one young man who would grab the dishsoap and drink it if he was not monitored. One day I was lucky enough to have to call poison control and I was told that to make sure he got plenty of (liquids). I think the only side effect was loose stool.

Definitely avoid the soap from here on in; your herps can bathe just fine in warm water alone and this is a prime example of why NOT to put soap in there LOL. I agree with the majority here, you should probably try to get some water in her to try and dilute whatever soap might be left in her system. The soap was already diluted at least to some extent if she just drank her bathwater, so I don't think it will harm her -- she might be icky for a few days, but hopefully that'll be it.
