I have never seen or used that,,,this is what alot of the members here use

http://shophc.com/cart/popup_image.p...ac84a835c7ff0e

A new, manual control rheostat that will handle up to 500 watts of heating devices or heat bulbs. Dual receptacles allow you to plug and control two items at once. Great for controlling heat emitters, heat pads, or spot bulbs. Also includes Velcro touch fastener for easy attachment to terrariums

I've used a rheostat like Marsha is talking about it, and it worked well. The only thing was it had to be adjusted manually which meant I had to monitor quite a bit to keep the hot end of the tank the temperature I wanted. Now I use thermostats, which automatically keep it the temperature I want. And these just plug in...there's no wiring to do.

Of course, I still check the temp frequently in the tanks in case a thermostat breaks or something.

I got mine here:

I use exactly the type of thermostat you are talking about to control a 250 watt Ceramic Heat Emitter in my big Iguana cage. Its great. Keeps the temps right where I want it without having to constantly fiddle with it if the room temperature changes.
One thing though. Make sure you have it on a surge protector. A power spike fried my first one.

Thank you all for responding. I will get it on sat. hopefully. It is just such a pain to have to constantly watch the temps. I don't mind checking them, that only takes a second. It's the checking then adjusting the dimmer and waiting then checking again etc. until they are right. And then it gets colder outside and you are right back in your herp room doing it all over again. I want that product not because I won't check the temps. but because it will make it easy for me to control them and it will be less stress on my leo. Everytime I have to keep looking in to see the temps. she comes out and gives me a look like get lost. Anyways thank you all and have a good day.

When dealing with thermostats, you must keep in mind that there are two types commonly used for reptiles, proportional and nonproportional. Both have remote sensors (probes) and allow you to set the temps. However, they function differently.

The nonproportional thermostat is basically an on/off switch for the heating devices. They allow full power to the heater(s) until the set temperature is achieved and then turn it off. Depending on the sensitivity, when the temperature drops 1-5 degrees, it turns the heater back on at full bore. This could cause the "light bulb" style heaters to burn out prematurely, especially where the temperature drop is rapid. Sort of like turning a light in your house on and off constantly 24/7. These are the least expensive types and if you have some basic electrical wiring knowledge, can be had for around $70.00 and will handle up to 500 watts of heating equipment. W. W. Grainger has them and they are made by Ranco. One of these plus a cheap extension cord and your in business.

Proportional thermostats work like a temperature maintaining rheostat. They provide a constant power supply to the heating equipment to maintain the set temperature, requiring only enough wattage to keep the heater at a constant temperature. Say you have a 150 watt heating device, but once the set temperature is reached it only requires 75 watts to maintain. The proportional thermostat will regulate the power out put to do so. Remember the nonproportional thermostat requires a 1-5 degree drop in temperature to activate, meaning that a temperature drop must occur to activate it. Proportional thermostats are more expensive.

We keep emerald tree boas exclusively. We don't have the luxury of a snakeroom, yet. Our adult and sub-adult cages are kept in an air conditioned environment. We use proportional thermostats in this situation as we don't want the temperature fluctuation required to activate the nonproportional type. We do use nonproportionals when we have neonates as we dedicate an unused bathroom as a nursery. We close off the AC vent and heat the whole room (when needed). The nonproportionals are used more as a back up.

BTW, when you are heating numerous cages, proportionals are a lot easier on the electric bill as less power is required to maintain temperature than to constantly have 150+ watt heating devices turn on full bore.

hey actually I have the same one exactly I got mine from a pet store close to me its ok its kind of a manual one once you get the temp where you want it you just have to slide it around abit so you know where it needs to be and leave it there and it will be a constant flow the light as long as you have it on and when you turn it off it goes back to room temp. but what I did for my Brazilian Rainbow Boa is I have 2 lamps with two lights hooked up to it one is a HCE and the other is a night time low wattage bulb to keep temps around 74. but make sure you have a switch on the light it self so you can turn off the one you dont need example- day have the night one of night have the day off. and I have a flurocent light for the daytime effect. i hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for responding. I was thinking the same thing dogboa. I was thinking that it can't be good for the leo's mind to have the light go on and off all the time. I was thinking of putting a regular blub over the cage as a constant light. Is there any special blub I should get? My guess would be some type of blub with a warm glow to it. What wattage should it be for a 20 L.
