Baking Soda?

Baking soda is very popular for odor reduction. I was wondering if it would be safe to place a flow-through pack of baking soda in the larger lizard cages in an inaccessible spot. The cages don't really smell bad from being dirty or anything, it just that they each have their own distinct odor....especially the skinks...this is just an idea, and i'm looking for feed back.

Sara, I know there are some rectangular pads that can go under your substrate to obsorb some of the odor,,,I will search and see if I cant find the information for you.

Good idea there, I would not be able to give a safe answer to that question. But, very good idea.

I've hung a fine cloth bag filled with baking soda in my ig cage for a few years now (replaced when I remember to). I find with the humidity the stuff clumps up easily so I have to toss the bag around to loosen it up and expose new sodium bicarbonate to the air (again I do this when I remember to). I don't know if it really did anything or if it is still working as my cage is odorless and I can't remember that last time I replaced it.

The only danger I see from it is the excess sodium in it if they ingest any. Or somehow a thick cloud of it is created then one of two things can happen (1) ignition and a fireball (2) possible respiratory problems. But this thick cloud of it would have to be on like a flour mill level.

hmmm....those things look interesting, but I dont really have a substarte for the skinks, for the most part they are on the linoleum...I'm just worried about this winter when I have the windows all closed up, I dont want the smell to get over powering...but then of course the most stinky of the crew (skinks) will be hibernating so they wont be stinking it up by pooping and whatnot. I like your idea about the baking soda Mark. I was looking at those 'flow through' boxes that never expose the animal to the soda....sorta the same concept of the bag...minus the work of putting it in a bag! The iguana tank is humid so I guess i'd have to shake up the box, but the dragon and the skink tanks arent humid at all, so it shouldnt be a huge prob. I'm just looking to see what everyone thinks,
Thanks
