help savanna monitor wont eat
I got 2 savannas for my birthday and the one monitor will eat like crazy and the other wont eat anything ive had them 2 days. We got them from the reptile place and hour after they had gotten them into the store.
The one that wont eat anything sleeps all the time. The guy from the store told me to put him in warm water for a little while to hydrate him and i just tryed that and he still hasnt eaten. And I have also tryed force feeding him but I cant seem to get his mouth open.
Both lizards are a step up from hatchlings are both pretty stocky. I have them in a 10 gallon tank at the moment.
if anyone can give me some pointers it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If you've only had them for 2 days it's quite possible it's in a period of adjustment. Most reptiles do not usually handle change well and will not eat for a while. Did the store mention if they were wild or captive bred ?? Most wild caught specimens are heavily loaded with internal parasites, which could be another sign of not eating properly. It would also help if you could provide your heating/lighting arangements. I'm assuming they are babies if you have them in a tank that small as they will quickly outgrow it. Let us know your cool side/ warm side temps.

Im not to sure weather they are captive bread or wild to tell the truth. Can the internal parisites be deadly ?
And right now the warm side is about 90 aand the cool side is about 84 which I am working on brings down at the moment just matter of changing the bulbs around in the hood. And am also running a uv light during the day. And yes they are babys.
I was chalking it up to him just getting adjusted but the fact that he sleeps so much and is very lazy kinda got me worried.
Thanks for the reply

Welcome to HC!! If one is eating and the other is not it would be a good idea to seperate them, as one gets stronger than the other he may start "hogging" all of the food. Plus if it is parasites you want to lower the chances of contaminating the other. Find a herp vet in your area and ask to get a fecal done. Make sure your temps are up to species standards ad ask the petstore if they noticed a lack of eating before you got it. Keep us posted.

Well I went to a reptile guy by my job today and asked him what I should try doing. He said not to worry about the one getting the other sick. He said more then likly he is just a weaker and need to be force fed to get him going. He said that my lizard just might not be strong enough right now to deal with the parisites. He also said every monitor has them just some can deal with them and others cant.
But he said to force feed him so I force fed him a pinky. So ill see if he will eat on his own in a couple days and if not ill force feed him again. If he still wont eat on his own im going to take him back and either get my money back or a new monitor Which I dont want to do. I just want this one to eat an survive. So ill do my best to get him healthy.
Thanks for the welcome
And thank you for the help.

I'm not a big fan of force feeding, it can cause stress. But I'm glad he ate for you. I still think seperating them is the best course of action.

to early to force feed... it really stresses them out and cause further problems. someone correct me if im wronge but force feeding is a last ditch effort to get them eating. i still would seperate them if not for the worry of further contamination but to elimanate the stress factor in there as well. or at the very least move them to a bigger enclosure
