I would put him in a bigger enclosure but I dont have one and I dont have another enclose period so really I think force feeding was the last resort. But I am happy that he atleast kept it down.

But what kinda problems can be cuased by force feeding ? these are my first monitors. I have leopard geckos and a crested which are doing great but these monitors are the first.

Force feeding any animal is very stressful. That is the biggest concern. You can also exert too much pressure if you accidentaly push or squeeze the wrong way, it doesn't take much force to cause an injury. Keep a close eye on the two to make sure the stronger one doesn't try to injure the weaker one. Also feed them seperately. Use a rubbermaid container and let them eat out of the enclosure, the little one may not feel threatened and decide to eat all by himself. Keep us posted.

Same issue

I am having the same exact problem! I went to a reptile show yesterday & bought a savanna monitor. He seemed active enough when I first got him (not skirmmy or anything but definitely awake & alert). He slept on my lap the whole car ride home (which I though was ok since he probably had a big day), but he's barely been awake since. He sleeps constantly, the only time he'll wake up is if I pick him up, but even still he'll just fall asleep within 2 minutes while he's in my hand. He's in a 20 gallon tank with a basking spot, a water bowl for bathing, & a nice enclosed shelter area for hiding. The basking spot is between 85-90 degrees & the shelter is between 80-85 degrees (durring the daytime, and a little cooler @ night). He'll actually just fall asleep wherever I put him in the tank (he just won't get up and walk around). I dropped a few crickets in the tank with him, but he doesn't seem interested (he even lets the crickets sit on him). I also put in a pinke (thawed) which he has ignored completely. I'm gonna get some meal worms for him too (just to see if he'll eat them). I think he might've snapped at a cricket once, but only got a piece of him and then went to sleep with the piece hanging out of his mouth! If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I've allready reviewed the pervious posts to this thread. Thanks!!!

Well I can tell you a couple things I tryed with my monitor But to tell the truth I ended up taking him back and getting another one. But He said the one I brought back didnt look so bad.

But anyway the guy at my reptile place told me to sit him in warm wew minutes. Then he said to get some petia light <the baby formula>and push his head into it until he drinks. I also tryed to force feed him a pinkie the first time he kept it down but the second time he puked it up a few days later half digested so thats when I decided to bring him back. But I was also told that the monitors can take up to 10 days to get fully adjusted.

You can also try and keep count of the crickets your putting into the tank. Which started to do now with the new monitor and my other one just to make sure that they are eating and its reasuring when I see that a bunch are missing. Becuase for some reason they wont eat infront of me which ****s becuase I love to watch them eat.

YOu can also try building a small out door enclosure becuase the natural sunlight makes them a lot more active with mine a soon as I bring them out on a sunny day its like night and day. If you do build one make it out of screen becuase the glass tank will boil the lizard.

I hope that some of this helps you. LET ME KNOW/.

I am in a rush so I have not read the other posts. Forgive me if I mention someone already stated.

First of all Basking spots need to be 120 to 125. Monitors need it HOT, expecially savannahs. This can be a leading cause to not eating. Ambient temp in the mid 80's is fine. But a basking temp of 120 highly reccomended. But I say around 110 is a must. SO aim for 120.
Second, They need dirt. They are a digging species. So a minimum of 5 inches for a neonate. This can also be a result of not eating.
3rdly, offer live small prey items. Such as pinky mice and crickets. Crickets are the staple when they are neonates.
Would be good also to soak the animal weekly to prevent dehydration.

Again I have not read any of the posts, sorry.
