i also feed my snakes in separate feeding containers. its just so much easier since I have substrate instead of paper towels or newspaper. i don't want them eating it or associating my hand going in with getting food. also its much easier to clean up the containers instead of dragging 3 20 gallon tanks out to the sink for cleaning.

I always recommend feeding outside the enclosure, to avoid substrate ingestion, plus it keeps the snake from associating a hand in the tank with food. However, I don't handle my snakes a whole lot, only when I need to and for presentations really, so I feed mine in the enclosure. They do associate my hands with food if they're in the tank, but they never strike, just tongue flick looking for something edible.

That reminds me of my daughter's snake, Spectre...she forgot to wash her hands once after handling her gerbils, and she picked Spectre up....now I might have expected him to make a mistake and chomp on her hands (and I wouldn't have blamed him if he had), but all he did was some super serious tongue-flicking. I came in right after she picked Spectre up and noticed he was acting oddly, and I said,"He almost acts like he smells food"...Her eyes got wide, and she handed him off to me in a big hurry saying,"Oh! I forgot to wash after holding the gerbils!!!" He never seemed like he was thinking of biting though, just did a lot of tongue-tasting...he was sure something yummy was there somewhere ... He's so mellow!

I feed in a seperate feeding tank, and for transport, which is very rare with my snakes,I use a pillow case.My Nikita was fed in her enclosure for six month, and the owner before was bitten many, many times by her.The lady who had her before that guy had her for a year and Nikita was fed in an extra tank and the lady NEVER got bitten.I heard stories like that too many times and I will continue to feed outside with all my snakes. There is also the substrate problem of swallow some, which can be dangerous,as already said.

I feed my animals in the same enclosures mainly due to the size and the trouble of actually getting to the animals (Crocodilians). My smaller animals aren't a threat either way so no worries on separate container there either.

Normally the animals only come over to observe my reasons of being there and if they notice food, they kick in, if they don't, they go on ignoring me or try to escape. I've never had a problem with food associations.
