I Feel Terrible!

Well, Saturday night around midnight, I thought to myself "I've put off feeding Smaug, I should go do it before I forget." So I put Smaug in his Rubbermaid feeding tub with the lid on and got the frozen mouse out to get warm. I figured it would take about 10-15 minutes to warm, so I went back to my bedroom to read a book. I fell asleep reading and when I woke back up, Smaug was gone! It's been three days and I have gone through about everything looking for him (under appliances, by the hot water heater, through my clothes, etc). He's still a juvenile at a little over 2 feet long and about as thick as a quarter at his thickest part, so he could be anywhere. I feel so bad since it's totally my fault.

I have a 1 bedroom apartment, so unless he went into the hole in the wall under the sink (*crosses fingers*), there's only so many places he could be. I also have to move in about 2 weeks and I am dreading not being able to find him before I have to leave. I tried some of the tricks I'd seen listed online, like sprinkling flour on the floor and leaving a dead mouse in one of his hides. I even got a live mouse in a 10 gallon tank and put the lid so that Smaug could get in to get the mouse, but probably couldn't get out once he ate it. He hasn't eaten in two weeks, so he has to be getting hungry. Any other ideas? I'll be so sad if I can't find him before I move cause he was such a good natured snake.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Have you check in your couch? Check the cushions, anywhere there is a hole and you may have to open the bottom up to see if maybe he is inside. My Bp always escaped and went inside the nearest speaker. Try anyplace dark, look ontop of blinds..anyplace you wouldnt think he could get. Please keep us posted.

And start your search in the areas closest to the last known place he was. They frequently will hole up pretty quick after escaping.
Good luck!

Been there..

Seems that most of the time I've had something escape, they always turned up in either the laundry room or in my dresser, including an iguana I once had.

I'm not sure what species it is you have, but hunting for your snake at night may help.

Goodluck,
Zane

He's a Brazilian rainbow boa and more active at night. I have thought about laying down aluminum foil in possible runways and waiting at night for him to come out. The problem is that my other pets (the rabbits in particular) are always moving around, so it's hard to hear other noises.

So sorry to hear this - but don't feel too bad. We've all made mistakes and most of us have had a reptile go missing at some point. It happens. Ours luckily have always been found.

Ok, you've tried some of the tricks and to no avail yet, but keep trying them - do the flour thing again, leave some food out,.. the food trick doesn't always work, as snakes can go for lengthy periods without eating. Have you tried leaving water out? - snakes do dehydrate quicker than they go hungry and he may be tempted out by thirst,. also rainbows need relatively high humidity so if it is quite dry then he may come out for a soak so leave a bowl of fresh water out for him large enough to bathe in. You could also try leaving a container out, with half over a heat pad, where he might seek out the heat and the safety of a hiding spot, although if it's as warm over there as it is here then the need for heat won't be high on the list of priorities, but it's worth a try.

Good luck, i really do hope he turns up. Never give up hope. One of our rat snakes escaped when he was just a baby and was missing for five days, before he turned up in the same room up on some shelves rumaging through a bag!

Just had an escape with one of my ball pythons the other day...he was out for 2 days...and even after looking EVERYWHERE, he was no place to be found. But one night as I watched the others roaming around, I decided to check again since they also are more active at night and voila...there he was under the couch I had searched under hours before...so I would check at night when he is more apt to be moving...Lyn

Good luck!
When Ky-Lin escaped, she was gone for a couple of days...Merlin's right because she was holed up under a bookshelf that's right next to her enclosure...I'd definitely check anything and everything right around the area where Smaug escaped...and I'd check the same places repeatedly because he might move around a lot from one place to another...

I hope he turns up soon!
