I went to the garden center today and found some plants I liked.
The only thing they didn't have were pre-bonsai plants. Here is my list of possibles so far... Parlour Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) Peperomia (peperomia caperata) It is the purply silver one Pink Polka-Dot (h. ypoestes sang.) I think it's the right name. the "pink" was more a fuchia Dracaena it was like the rubbery leafed multi coloured one but the leaves were softer and it was taller. Coleus (Camellia japonica) and as a larger woody plant I liked the Bouganvillea. Air plants. The only thing I bought was moss in 2 little 2 inch pots. I figured you can't go wrong with moss This is not a definite list, I can't use all of them but They gave a nice variety of colours and textures. The Bouganvillea was very nice with verigated leaves and gets raspberry coloured flowers. Is there any Plants that would be better to use or, ones on that list I should stay away from? I would love to hear anyone's suggestions, I am open to all advice! I will be going tomorrow to buy the terrarium! I 'm going to set it up and then leave it until the end of July before I look for any Cresteds. (I am going on holidays in july) this will give me the chance to play with my set up a bit and get the temperature and Humidity stable. ![]() |

Coleus and Camelia Japonica are 2 completely different plants. Coleus is a soft stemmed herbaceous plant while the camelia is a woody trunked flowering small tree. Both the camellia and the bougainvillea have high light requirements and the bougainvillea is going to have very sharp thorns. The bougainvillea will also grow into a sprawling vine unless clipped frequently.

I would use Parlour palms since they are slow growers (they wont take over your Terrarium) and they are VERY hardy (my mom left some in the dark basement witho water for a month and a half and they were still OK!, they make awesome background plants.of course moss is great. I would also recommend some bromeliads they are beautiful pants that will give you awesome flowers.
For your feature plants may I recommend BlackJungle.com they are very good and specialize in naturally grown plants for your Terrarium

I would keep your plant budget low. You'll kill alot on the first few goes. And with cresteds you don't want anything too fragile. On the way out of the nursery the other day I swapped my Rex Begonia (a 10$ plant) for a regular begonia (1$), I put it in the enclosure and now all the flowers are knocked off and half the stems are broke, I'm glad it was only a dollar and not ten.
I'm not too familiar with parlour palms but if it was able to survive two months in the dark without water it will probably drown (sp?) in a vivarium. Dracanea's are a good choice. The family is very diverse and all the plants are fairly hardy. Peperomia's are also an excellent choice. I picked up a watermelon peperomia the other day and am in love with it. I would look at vivarium supply sites to get an idea of some plants that you can/should use. You can find most of the plants at nurseries, just keep checking as tropicals are very seasonal. |

Good point about the parlour (neanthebella ) Palms cody a tropical terrarium may be too vet for them. You definetley want to stick with the stronger tropicals for Crested Geckos like philodendrons, Alocosias and my favorite Rhapidaphora Tetrasperma since these can hold a lizard with no problem and they are very beautiful. Good Luck

Merlin They were Coleus then, I was using the latin name listed with the common name, I guess they screwed that one up LOL.
I was thinking about turning the Bouganvillea into a bonsai type plant. But I think I will stick to smaller plants as I want a water feature as well. deltro I LOVED the parlour palm The only reason why I didn't buy it was because the only one they had was in a pot mixed with other plants. I will wait until they get in a new shipment. Thanks for the Link! I wish I could just order from those guys, they have exactly what I want, I could try ordering them through the garden center here but there is no guarantee that I will get what I order. (judging by the list they gave me with the wrong latin name) LOL. By the looks of the pics, I lucked out and bought the moss Black Jungle have listed Thanks for the Advice Chronic! I will do a search on the palm and see what it can and can't live with. I kept reminding myself that the Cresteds are going to trash the delicate plants. So I did pass by a lot of the nicer plants like orchids and such. I am cheap when it comes to plants, I stick to the $1-2 inch pots or the $3-4 inch pots LOL. I like to grow my plants myself. Hence my sorry looking ficus trees I really like the purply silver peperomia I had it in my hands but decided to wait until I have come up with a definite list and will buy them all at once. |

The most important things I learned from all the research I've done for a naturalistic enclosure are:
- keep it simple, no more than 3 species unless you know what you are doing; - inform yourself about the species before making a decision (size, shape, does it fruit, flower, etc); - think horizontal and vertical layers and choose each species for a specific location; - think color - dark greens on the back, light greens/yellows on front help the depth illusion; - focal point - a plant or a decoration should be the focal point of the terrarium - add more than one if you know what you are doing; And some crested related info: - sturdy resilient plants - they will have to cope with a lot of abuse; - low light and low water plants as first choices; - safe plants - no spikes, sharp points, etc, no plants that look like trees but bend like grass; - lots of little leaves look better than few big leaves;
