BTS Substrate

I'm buying a blue tongued skink at the end of the month and I need to order all of the supplies...Everything that I have read has said to use a particulate substrate that will allow them to dig and hide, such as wood shavings. I know not to use pine or cedar, but i've narrowed it down to two choices and I was wondering if anyone with prior skink knowledge could help me out.

Option #1

Option #2

Even if you dont know alot about skinks, opinions will be welcomed.
Has anyone had problems with their skinks getting impactions? Thanks for the help!

They both seem to be ok to me but personally I would go with aspen bedding since I have never heard of that fluffy stuff and it looks like your Blue Tongue Skink may ingest it from time to time.

I would definitely go with the aspen. I use aspen for my rabbit, and I'm very happy with it.

I'm not sure I'd trust that other stuff...

If those are your only choices, I agree with the others, aspen is great for snakes and probably ok for the skink. I use coconut fiber, it's more natural looking.

I haven't even thought about coconut fiber...yeah I was sort of leaning towards the aspen anyways, but I had never seen the other fluffy stuff before so I thought that I should ask. How often to you guys change out the aspen chips? I know to spot clean everyday, but I dont know how often I would have to do a complete exchange.

ALSO i've read that you should feed them canned cat food witht their greens, but i've also read that you should NEVER feed cat food to anything other than a cat because of it's high amounts of animal protiens.....i'm so confused!

Hi Lacey,

I found the most amazing site on Blue Tongue Skink today. I have read the whole care sheet and am really impressed with it. It will answer a lot of your questions, there's a really good section on diet too. They say a small amount of cat or dog food is ok with their regular greens and fruit. They also recomend aspen for the substrate. Here's the link
