LAWS Canada to US

My search for a blue tongued skink has directed my attention across the border multiple times. Does anyone know the laws concerning transporting herps from canada to the US? I would be driving up to check out the Blue Tongue Skink before I got it, and if I liked it I would be taking it home with me!

As I stated in your other post the only way to be sure is to check with the agencies involved. In this case I imagine it would be the border patrol. They are the only ones who can tell you for sure what is and is not allowed. And make sure that you get any permissions needed in writing!

Some info

Hi! I've done some research into your question, also because I'm curious about it. (If I ever decide to move back to the States, I'd like to be able to take my snakes with me.) The info is hard to find and probably one phone call to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would probably tell you all you need to know! Here's what I could find:

8. Q: What are Center for Disease Control requirements for importing pet snakes and other reptiles, such as turtles and tortoises?

A: CDC does not regulate snakes, but does limit imports of small turtles. Those with a carapace (shell) length of less than 4 inches may not be imported for any commercial purpose. An individual may import as many as six of these turtles for noncommercial purposes. This rule was implemented in 1975 after it was discovered that small turtles frequently transmitted salmonella to humans, particularly young children.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regulates the importation of reptiles. Regulations regarding reptiles, fish, and endangered species can be found on their import/export website. http://www.le.fws.gov/CommWildlifeImportExport.htm
Here's also a link to the import form you might need to fill out. (It could give you an idea of the information you'd need about the animal.)http://www.le.fws.gov/faqs.htm

I hope that helps... It looks like a real headache on paper, but it's probably easy if you just make a couple of calls.
Let us know what you find out.
