Humidity Probs

What's a good way to keep the humidity up there without over watering the substrate? Right now I'm misting the sides of the Terrariums, but it just doesn't seem to be doing the job.

If you have a screen lid you can cover a portion of it to hold humidity. Live plants also help keep humidity up. A drip system works good as well.

What exactly is a drip system? Is that some extra mechanical thing I have to buy? THe covering the screen lid idea is good though, thanks a lot.

i use a reptile natural humidifier. It's basically a tall cynlinder of water that has an air pump attached to it and then another tube goes into the terrarium and raises the humidifier. I found mine at www.drsfostersmith.com just look for reptile humidifiers and you should find it.

Lorno, search the forums. It's as easy as a bottle of water on the top of the terrarium, dripping water into some pond or plant. Quite rudimentary but virtually free compared to mechanical/electrical systems.

Different substrate and less ventilation can make all the difference in high or low humidity. Good substrates for keeping humidity up are cypress mulch, top soil, those little bricks that are compacted and you add water etc.. My favorite is cypress mulch. A over head lamp over a water source will raise the humidity or a under tank heater placed under the water source will raise it aswell. Like mentioned, a trash bag or other waterproof material over the screen top or just decreasing ventilation by any means with raise the humidity. All depends on the species of course, how much you do so. So, what species is this?

"those little bricks that are compacted and you add water etc.." that's what I use, I have a Brazilian Black Tarantula, so it's not needing massive humidity or anything, just a bit higher then most other species of T's.

As a T will have a pretty small cage what about something like a cigar humidor humidifier? They’re designed to keep a small area somewhere in the 60 to 70% range.

I had one 20 gallon snake enclosure that wanted to let the humidity dry up to 20% for some reason... I raised it to 40 - 50% just by partially covering the screen top and switching a water bowl that had a much bigger surface area. I don't know if tarantulas use water bowls though, so that may not be an option...

T's do use a water bowl, but not a big one and I've yet to do the screen covering thing. Would a piece of wood work best? And what is a cigar humidor humidifier?? I've never heard of one of those before lol. Thanks again for all your guys' contributions
