Annoying little flies!!

I have some little flies that are hanging around in some of my cages, mostly round the water bowls, they are about the same size as a fruit fly, can anyone tell me what the could be and how to get rid of them, I tried getting a picture, heres one that drowned in the Bearded Dragons water.

not a bad pic considering the size of the little buggers

Hello,
I wish I could be of more help, but I am not sure what insects are native to your area. I would say that looks like a mosquito, but I would probably be wrong.

During this time of year in your area, what insects are most abundant? If they are just beginning to appear, I guess it would be safe to say that they are just beginning to hatch.

Well Rich.. your the third person to say that, but we dont get them over here, I mostly get plagued by fruit flies, but I know these arnt them, so I am at a loss.

I'm not sure if they came in the soil that I bought for my Ts, there seem to be loads in one of my T tanks.

Hello,
If you find any of them escaping, and end up seeing one on you, trying to feed off you, its a mosquito. lol
Mosquito larvae live in stagnant water, so if they were transported with the soil, I would find it difficult to believe that they were mosquitos.
If the company where you purchased your soil from imported the soil with some other products from the U.S or another area where mosquitos are abundant, I guess it would be possible for some to have possibly been transported and may have hatched.
Good luck foguring out what it is. I would just kill them all as I see them. If they are a hatching species of insect from the soil, it can only have "so many" eggs/larvae in it. If they all remain contained to the enclosures, and are killed as they are seen, you should be able to wipe out the little critters.

Thanks Rich, that does sound very plausible...

The T tank that has the soil, her water bowl fills up with loads of them, and I see them flying around in her tank, when I go into change her water they all escape, so thats how they are getting into my other Tanks, and they are hanging around water, I am finding them in my bathroom now too.

I think I will have to get rid of the soil and buy new, and have a word with them at the garden center.

They are so annoying..I seem them flying about at night when I am watching TV they fly on and off the screen when its dark in here, I have to keep getting up to squish them lol

You don't have mosquitos In the UK? I thought EVERYONE had mosquitos!

It could be fungus gnats. They lay eggs and live in damp organic material and are frequently brought in in potted plants and potting soil. They don't seem to hurt anything just be annoying.
Not sure how you would kill them without harming your animals.

I'd say they're a gnat of some type. My tanks have occasionally made nice breeding grounds for small flies. I'd put up several strips of fly tape near the enclosures and change the water often. Once the numbers are reduced a bit by the fly tape, I'd do a complete change of the soil or temporarily use something less accomodating to the flies.

Fungus gnats are the most common problem around houseplants and herp cages. Not really much of a problem, just slightly annoying. Hey, if you have any baby gex or chams, they could eat them.
