Snake Feeding Question
Ok, I get the idea of using a feeding tub, and will be purchasing one this evening, and putting the holes in it and all. My question is this. How soon after feeding a snake in one of these tubs can I replace him to his cage?
I don't want to handle him so soon after feeding but I also don't want him to freeze his a** off in that tub either.

Hi Sentress,
I always put my snakes back to their cage right after feeding. It want harm them if you lift them up gently and put them straight back! I put my sinaloan milk with the feeding tank inside her cage after feeding, and wait until she goes to her hide. With my baby corns I do it diffrently;I take the feeding tanks in front of the cage and gently lift them up and straight into their home! Snakes like to drink or hide in a warm place right after eating,so I wouldn't wait too long! What kind of snake s/animals do you have? And welcome to HC!! |

I put mine back in their enclosures as soon as the mouse lump moves toward the center of their bodies. Handling them just enough to move them back won't hurt them at all, and I like to get them right back to their warm homes so that they can start digesting as quickly and efficiently as possible. I've had one experience with regurgitated mouse, and I'd just as soon avoid seeing that ever again if at all possible. Yuck

Ok cool that's what I wanted to know. I'll just have to be careful not to handle him too much. Last thing I want to do after eating a big meal is to be tossed about, so I certainly understand...
Thank you!

yeah, I realize I should wait a few days before handling him, but I just wanted to know how long after he swallows the food before I can put him back in his cage... I don't want to leave him in a plastic tub for 2 days lol...
But thank you for the advice. will I see his body go back to the normal size and that's the test of when it's safe to handle him or should I just wait a few days in general?

I was told mine could be handled after 2 or 3 days (is that right, guys?)...I usually wait until I see a poo with the corns, which is almost always right about 3 days after they eat. Ky-Lin (the children's python) digests more slowly, but I've found I can handle her after 3 days and she's fine, even if she hasn't pooed.
Jack is the only one who has ever regurgitated, and that was a day and a half to 2 days after he ate....It wasn't beacause of handling...it was because he was going into a shed. Some people don't feed their snakes if they know they're going to shed, but some let them choose. I let Jack choose, and he wanted to eat, but it happened to be a bad choice that particular time. All my snakes have done fine every other time they've eaten even if they were going into shed.

You can move them back to their tank immediately after they have swallowed. I have even moved mine with the tail still hanging out of the snake's mouth! The bit about not handling after eating is don't "play with them" Just picking them up and moving them back is fine. I make it a rule to leave them be for 2 days after feeding before handling.
