Night Vision?
Ok, another probably dumb question but here goes. I read somewhere that snakes (most reptiles) cannot see red light, and for this reason those red heat lights are good because they can't see the red anyways...
So I got one, and set a thermometer so that I can monitor what the temperature is on the warm side. Xantasa's tank sets beside my bed, lengthwise, against the wall. (I do alot of meditating on my bed and wanted him beside me) Last night when I climbed into bed, with all the lights off but that red heat lamp, I saw him react ever so slightly by moving his head back just a fraction, as if he wasn't quite sure what I was about to do. (I realize he's still new and getting used to everything.) now besides the obvious reminder to watch my actions, what I want to know is what was he reacting to? The vibrations of the bed? the sound of the bed? (it's the top of a bunk bed set and is a noisy foamy mattress) My energy as I came close to him? or could he see me in the red light? His tongue wasn't coming in and out so I assume he wasn't smelling me. Anyone have any thoughts as to what he was reacting to? This is fascinating to me, and I really want to know so I can better help him to adjust.

I don't know for sure, but I think they have good night vision, being nocturnal. I don't think they can see the red light, but I think they can see movement very well in the dark. Mine always seem to be able to see me even if the only light on is the red one, which they're not supposed to be able to see. They're also very sensitive to vibration.

I have always doubted that "can't see the red light bit". I have seen too many reptiles that look right at it. Snake's vision is more oriented towards movement. So he probably did see you moving. And they do pick up vibrations as well. As he gets used to you that startled movement will diminish. Many of mine will come out and watch me to see what I am up to!

If they CAN see it,do you think it bothers them? Should I switch to the black ones until I can decide between cables, mats, and CHEs?

Another thing about the light bulb you use, and lets make the big assumption that they can't see in the red light. Remember you are in the real world and the red light bulb is not a perfect filter so there will be many other wavelengths present thus many other colors of light to see by if they can't see with the red.
Also the red light interacts with different surfaces and reflects other parts of the spectrum. I can remember when running a light board in theater we had to wear "blacks" and work under darkened (blue) lights -- some of these black fabrics looked red under the blue light (the shorter wavelengths present were asorbed while the longer ones were reflected back giving it the appearance of the longer wavelenght's color)

My Red Eye tree frogs are noctural of course and will rarley move around during the day but once I turn the Basking lamp off and the Red light on almost immediatley they are up and about looking for food I believe they notice a little bit of the light but not enough to think its "day time" even with my nose almost pressed against the glass they dont seem to notice.

Mark I hadn't thought about that, it certainly makes sense... By the way, I love your pics of Bob... My favorite is the one with the lily hat!!!
Bob's such a cutie!!! And Deltro Star what you said also makes alot of sense. I guess that goes back to the idea that it's not completely dark even at night...

I use infra red for my chameleon, and I dont think he can see it, although it lights his cage up, he still goes to sleep when all the other lights go off, that one stays on day and night and it doesnt seem to bother him at all.
