Unless you have fed the snake in the last few days I wouldn't worry about it too much unless its below 50 degrees in the room. They are temperate snakes and regularly have to deal with cooler temps.
And if necessary you can always filtch a bulb from a lamp in the house!

Absolutely! All my heatlamps are all fitted with regular old household bulbs. They are no different than the "basking" bulbs that you buy at the petstore.

Except you don't have to pay high prices for fancy packaging!

They will be fine as long as its warm in your house, I would use belly heat for snakes anyways, better for them than lights, plus with a heat pad you could run it 24/7, and it usually uses less electricity.

I stopped buying expensive lamps for my snakes as well, I'd rather spend that money on megarays for the lizards. Besides it's easier to regulate the temps by switching the wattages.

Jay, I've read a couple of times some good words about megarays, but I didn't know that you can switch wattages. I suppose you are talking about the heat emitter ones, right?
Btw, are they good for Bearded Dragons? Seems they can't reach the necessary temp for basking spot...

Megarays are the best source of UVB (in my opinion) I've never had a problem with the basking temps under mine as they do produce quite a bit of heat. What I was actually referring to though was using regular household bulbs to regulate heat on my snake enclosures. Since you can go as low as 25 watts you run less risk of overheating a tank.
