Tomorrow might be the R-Day! =) Need help with baby beardies and leo sizes.

Hi!
I've found at last a decent reptile store in a nearby city. On the phone they said they had some baby Bearded Dragons and baby Leopard Geckos but didn't know their age.
The store clerk said that the Bearded Dragons were 3 inches long but didn't know the Leopard Geckos size and kindly told me that he didn't want to disturb them during the day just to measure their size. Fair enough =)

From what I've read, none of these 2 species should be sold younger than 6 weeks.
Does anyone has a table of their approximate sizes according to their age? That way tomorrow I can make an educate guess of their age.

Thanks! =)
Ricardo

Ricardo, you really cant tell their age based on size. I have some Bearded Dragons right now that are from the same clutch and one of them is about 2-3 inches bigger than the others. So its really hard to tell. Most will say at 6 weeks it should be about 7-8 inches.

Thanks Marsha. So if they should be 7-8 inches at 6 weeks, then probably a 3 inches baby is probably 3 weeks old. I know this is a "wild" guess.

I should probably wait a couple of weeks before I buy any of those right?

Its better to go with something a little older unless you feel they are alert and healthy. Make sure they are energetic and have wide open eyes, bright and happy, lol. Before I found friends on these forums, I did my research reading a bearded dragon book but it mention nothing about at what age to buy, so I bought my first Bearded Dragon at the age of 1 week. He is now almost 3 yrs old and doing great. So the buying decision is really up to you.

3" does sound like the Bearded Dragons are quite young - hatchlings are around this size, although as Marsha said, it depends on the individual, and some grow more quickly than others.

It is advisable to sell Bearded Dragons only after 4-8 weeks, this is to ensure that the babies are healthy, eating well and growing right. But I advise you go to the pet shop and see for yourself how healthy the Bearded Dragons are, and if they look well, are eating and are in good conditions, then go for it. Good luck!

Just a little follow up on this story.

I went to the shop and was very glad to see that they had a large reptile section and wide range of accessories.
The geckos had between 5 and 8 inches and the Bearded Dragons around 6 inches long, so they're not as young as I thought they were.

After a lot of Leo recommendations, I was decided to get one although my wife wanted a Bearded Dragon. And even though I had my head full of reasons to get a leo and not a Bearded Dragon, they all evaporated when I saw the baby Bearded Dragons =)

Take a look at this beauty =)

PS: Marsha and Bitis, you both answered while I was posting this.
The pic is not very good (low shutter speed) and in my iBook's screen is not the best way to fine tune color.

Merlin, the doctor told me not to bother call him in the morning if the symptoms persist. I would be hooked on Bearded Dragons beyond any possible help =)

A bit off-topic question but have a look at this pic.
In the bottom left corner you can see the metallic light fixture (sorry, don't know the name of it). Does that generate enough heat enough to make that corner of the top cage warm?

That is a standard dome light, you can adjust the amount of heat you get by changing the wattage on the bulbs. It's better to start on the low side and work your way up so that you don't overheat your herp.

Thanks for the advice Jay but I'm afraid you missed the point.
I was wondering if the heat lights in the cage bellow generate enough heat to warm the cage above (in that specific spot)?
I ask for 2 reasons:
- if that generates enough heat, maybe I can skip buying a Under Tank Heater for a small Leo cage;
- and (thinking ahead) wondering if stacked cages like that wouldn't create a "heat cluster".
