Compatibility
Evening, folks. New to this site. Hoping someone can help me out. We have a large toad in a vivarium, and just caught several salamanders in the front yard. Question: Are these guys compatible; i.e., could they live in the same tank, or would this be a bad idea? Anyone who can give us some insight, thanks.

Re: Compatibility
Welcome!
Generally speaking mixing species is a bad idea. Toads are like garbage disposals, they'll eat anything. I would advise you to release the salamanders back into the yard and enjoy them out there. I would *love* to have sallies in my front yard!

Re: Compatibility
I would imagine the toads would eat them.

Welcome to the site Chef-
We're glad you joined.
I would have to agree with Lacey on this one. Mixing species is very difficult on the creatures and you really shouldn't take wild life out of the environment, as a general rule.
Good luck with your new creatures!

Re: Compatibility
I will chime in also in that it would be best to not put the sallies with the toad. In addition to all the other points already made, you never know if the toad has a parasite that is benign to it but could hurt the sallies or the other way around.

Re: Compatibility
Those sallies would very soon be lunch for the toad. I agree on releasing them.

Re: Compatibility
As was stated in other posts, the salamanders will become b-fast, lunch, and dinner! You didn't say what type of salamanders you have. I believe that the spotted salamander is protected in MA and NH. I don't know about the stats or laws in ME. You should probably check them out.
